Job Description

Overview The Connecticut Proton Therapy Center (CPTC) is excited to invite applications for the position of Registered Nurse (RN) at our state-of-the-art facility in Wallingford, CT. RNs working at CPTC provide specialized oncology nursing care to patients of all ages including pediatrics undergoing proton beam radiation treatment for cancer. The RN plays a critical role in patient assessment, education, symptom management, care coordination, and emotional support throughout the treatment process. The Proton RN is responsible for delivering compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to oncology patients receiving treatment. The RN is expected to collaborate closely with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered treatment. A flexible schedule is sometimes needed as treatment times can run longer than expended due to downtime. The center intends to treat pediatrics patients requiring anesthesia, pediatrics who do not require anesthesia, and adults. Duties Conduct comprehensive patient assessments before, during, and after treatment Review medical histories, medications, allergies, and treatment plans Educate patients and families about proton therapy procedures, expected side effects, and self-care strategies Monitor patients for treatment-related side effects and complications Administer medications and supportive therapies as prescribed Coordinate care with multidisciplinary oncology teams Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and caregivers Maintain accurate clinical documentation and electronic medical records Assist with symptom management, pain control, and survivorship care Ensure compliance with radiation safety standards and center policies Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient care planning In conjunction with the Research Coordinator, support patients enrolled in clinical trials or research protocols when applicable Participate in educational in-services and seminars for health care providers; maintain current certification through continuing education Work Experience Requirements Minimum of three (3) years of experience in patient care as an RN Minimum of one (1) year of experience in Radiation Oncology/Proton Therapy preferred Required Skills and Abilities Strong knowledge/experience in clinical information and imaging systems Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail. Proven experience in medical care settings, specifically in Radiation Oncology or related fields Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and medical care practices Ability to plan work, establish priorities, and remain flexible Knowledge of materials, supplies, and equipment required to perform duties Knowledge of medications and treatments Education/Degree/Qualifications Graduate of an accredited nursing program Bachelor's degree preferred but can be supplemented with two years of related clinical nursing experience Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required Connecticut RN licensure required Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification is a plus Experience/knowledge of assessing/managing patients recovering from sedation in specific patient populations (i.e. pediatrics) preferred Other RNs at CPTC are expected to be flexible in their work shifts when the system experiences downtime and based on center volume. Days may be extended due to downtime to ensure that all patients are treated if possible. Planned weekend treatments may be required, especially around holidays or to make up missed treatments when there is downtime. CPTC will be treating pediatric patients under anesthesia
