The goal of the School Nurse is to advance student health, safety, well-being, and academic success through the delivery of comprehensive, evidence-based school health services. The School Nurse supports students' physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs by providing direct nursing care, managing health conditions and emergencies, promoting disease prevention and healthy behaviors, and reducing health-related barriers to learning. Through collaboration with students, families, school staff, healthcare providers, and community agencies, the School Nurse coordinates care, supports attendance and school engagement, uses data-informed and culturally responsive practices, and helps foster a safe, equitable, and supportive school environment where all students can fully participate and succeed.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required: Must be eligible or hold a valid State of Delaware certification as a Delaware School Nurse. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing (BSN). Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience. Valid and current CPR and AED certification. Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on the Child Protection Registry in the State of Delaware. Knowledge of the assessment of children and adolescents to effectively identify health issues and provide appropriate care Knowledge and skills in working with a wide range of students, including those with chronic health conditions (examples may include: feeding needs, medication administration, diabetic monitoring/intervention, and/or seizure management). Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administration, and the general public. Demonstrate knowledge of evidence- and research-based strategies that effectively promote student learning, behavioral supports, social-emotional learning, and overall achievement for students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities related to the District. Provide comprehensive school nursing services aligned with the professional standards and practice framework established by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), the Delaware Department of Education, Delaware Division of Public Health, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), emergency care plans (ECPs), and accommodations that address students' medical, academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs to ensure safe and equitable access to education. Provide direct nursing care and evidence-based health interventions for students with acute illnesses, injuries, chronic health conditions, mental and behavioral health concerns, and medically complex needs in accordance with physician orders, standing orders, nursing judgment, and district procedures. Administer medications, treatments, first aid, and emergency care in accordance with Delaware nursing regulations, district procedures, delegated medical authority, and established nursing protocols. Respond to medical emergencies and participate in school safety, crisis response, emergency preparedness, and public health response efforts in collaboration with school and community partners. Monitor compliance with immunization requirements, physical examinations, screenings, communicable disease reporting, exclusion guidelines, and other school health requirements in accordance with Delaware law, Division of Public Health guidance, and district expectations. Conduct and coordinate required health screenings and follow-up activities, including vision, hearing, postural, and other state-mandated screenings, and communicate results and recommendations to families as appropriate. Collaborate with IEP, Section 504, attendance, MTSS, and other student support teams to provide health-related expertise, develop accommodations, and support students whose health needs impact attendance, behavior, participation, or academic performance. Use student health, attendance, and school-wide data to identify trends, evaluate interventions, support continuous improvement efforts, and reduce health-related barriers to learning and chronic absenteeism. Promote student wellness, disease prevention, healthy behaviors, and health literacy through education, consultation, and school-wide health initiatives that support the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) framework. Consult and collaborate with students, families, school staff, healthcare providers, and community agencies to coordinate care, facilitate referrals, and ensure continuity of services between home, school, and healthcare settings. Observe and assess students regularly to identify health concerns, support early intervention efforts, and provide referrals for medical, behavioral health, or community-based services as appropriate. Support student participation in school-sponsored activities by reviewing health documentation, preparing medications and emergency care information, and ensuring appropriate health and safety procedures are in place for field trips, extracurricular activities, and athletics as applicable. Maintain accurate, confidential, and legally compliant student health records and documentation utilizing district-approved electronic health systems and data management procedures in accordance withFERPA, HIPAA
as applicable, and professional nursing standards. Establish and maintain professional, collaborative, and culturally responsive relationships with students, families, colleagues, administrators, healthcare professionals, and community partners. Maintain current knowledge of Delaware school nursing regulations, evidence-based nursing practices, public health guidance, and available community resources to support students and families effectively. Attend and actively participate in required professional development, mandatory trainings, conferences, and ongoing learning opportunities to maintain professional competence and support continuous improvement. Maintain current licensure and certifications required by the State of Delaware and district expectations, including Registered Nurse licensure, educator licensure/certification as applicable, CPR/AED certification, and required professional learning hours documented through DEEDS. Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, professional standards, district policies, administrative procedures, and ethical expectations related to school nursing practice. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the building principal and/or supervisor in support of student health, wellness, safety, and school operations.PHYSICAL DEMAND
