Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
Registered Nurse Responsible for the care and supervision of a group of patients, for a designated time frame. Provide care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, both direct and indirect. Utilize the environment, available instrumentation, and other health care team members, as appropriate, to provide care to the patients. Contribute to the administrative functioning of the nursing unit. Assists patients in meeting psychological needs and physiological needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Formulate a plan of care for each of the patients under the nurse's care; following established standards of patient care and departmental policy; giving attention to physical, psychosocial, educational, and discharge needs of the patient and family. Initiates the assessment by developing a written plan of care using assessment data. Documents every patient problems including knowledge, and coping skill development. Makes prompt notification to the physician about situations that require immediate intervention. Performs role of leader in a variety of education and therapy groups. Documents patient's reaction to the groups. Perform direct nursing care through utilization of the nursing process and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Collaborate with health team members to ensure safe practice by following pre-established policies in the delivery of care. Communicate information verbally and in writing. Plan and implement learning experience to meet personnel needs, along with unit and departmental requirements through formal or informal education. Attends and participates in quality improvement treatment team meetings. Participate in departmental Continuous Quality Improvement and Assurance activities. Assign patient care to other professional and ancillary nursing personnel to ensure that quality patient care is given. Attend at least 80% of scheduled staff and in-service education meetings, annually. Proactive patient and family teaching role. Explain medication requirement, necessity for medication. Ensure that the unit is stocked and run efficiently. Complete required documentation duties in a timely, accurate, and concise manner. Ensure that controlled substance counts are correct during his/her shift. Maintain confidentiality of all patient and personal information and protect the patients' rights. Function with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the hospital. Perform efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols, with appropriate communication and documentation. Assist nurse managers to supervise and evaluate personnel performance and nursing care. Demonstrate an awareness of self-responsibility and accountability for own professional practice. Comply with unit and hospital dress code. Participate actively in staff development activities and assist with orientation of new nursing personnel to the unit. Demonstrate awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit. Demonstrate effective communication methods and skills, using appropriate lines of authority. Coordinate patient care with other health care members: Identify patients with risk factors, compliance problems, and other special needs, and refer to the discharge planner as appropriate. Manage all referral consultations requested by physician. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
AND TRAINING
Graduate of an approved registered nurse program. Currently licensed as RN by the Georgia Board of Nursing. Familiar with equipment, tools, and work aids used in the delivery of patient care on a designated unit. BLS certification required, Appropriate certification and documentation of special training in special care areas.
MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE
Possess knowledge of the nursing process, including skills for the assigned area of duty. Proficient in the administration of IV therapy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to walk or stand for long periods. Ability to move heavy patients and equipment. Repeated bending, squatting, and stooping. Normal or corrected vision and hearing. Reaching and bending, including reaching above shoulder height. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull a minimum of 50 pounds. Ability to perform shift work including working 12 hour shifts On call Ability to communicate with employees, patients and visitors. Ability to remain calm under stress.
ANALYTICAL SKILLS
Ability to evaluate a situation and provide the necessary duties and expertise. Ability to delegate duties and responsibilities in order to provide quality care for the patient, while managing assigned personnel as efficiently as possible. Ability to communicate well within the department and with the other departments. Ability to assume function in a charge position after appropriate orientation. PHYSICAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Well-lighted, well-ventilated work areas. Work under stress and under the conditions that normally exist in a hospital.
SPECIAL DEMANDS
Ability to work both cooperatively and independently, to work efficiently under stress, to utilize sound professional judgement in establishing priorities and intervening in urgent and emergent patient care situations. Ability to promote a positive public image of the nursing unit and facility by communicating in a polite, tactful, and professional manner with patients, families, visitors, and co-workers. Required to work in areas other than those assigned.
