PACU/PreScreen Nurse Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments, including medical history review, medication reconciliation, and identification of surgical risk factors. Coordinate pre-surgical testing (labs, imaging, EKGs) to ensure patients meet clinical clearance requirements prior to procedures. Provide patient education on preoperative instructions, including NPO guidelines, medication adjustments, and procedure expectations. Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia teams, and primary care providers to address comorbidities and optimize patient readiness for surgery. Triage and evaluate patient concerns prior to surgery, escalating clinical issues as appropriate to ensure safety and compliance. Document assessments and communications accurately in the EHR, maintaining regulatory and organizational standards. Support quality and safety initiatives by identifying potential barriers to surgery and reducing day-of-surgery cancellations. Prepare and review patient records, charts and other pertinent information including a current H&P as well as all operative and informed consents Assess, instruct & prepare patients prior to surgery Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for surgical procedure Consult and coordinate with health care team members to provide bedside care for pre- and post-surgery patients Initiate IVs required before or following procedure Assess patients' post-operative condition, monitoring vital signs and other measures tied to discharge criteria Treat pain, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms of anesthesia Update charts, patient files, and medical records in a timely and accurate manner Monitor patients for condition changes, facilitating timely specialized interventions Provide individualized care for patients in accordance with surgical procedure undertaken, age level, and health status Create and maintains positive, personal, and warm atmosphere around the patient and their family Educate patients and their families on post-surgery care, as well as answering questions in a timely and complete manner Maintain patient confidentiality Attend required meetings and participates in committees, drills as requested Provide flexibility by helping in other areas of Institute such as the
Pain Suite and Imaging Center Skills/Requirements:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Georgia or compact licensure. BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred. Minimum of two years of perioperative, PACU, critical care, emergency department, or ambulatory surgery experience preferred. Strong assessment, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with physicians, anesthesia providers, and multidisciplinary teams. Knowledge of ambulatory surgery patient selection criteria and preoperative assessment processes preferred.
