Job Description
Directs specific nursing care activities and renders professional nursing care to patients within the med surg unit supporting medical care as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital. Med-Surg nursing care services the general patient population hospitalized for various causes, such as illness, surgery, testing, rehabilitation, or observation.

Collaborates with providers and other professionals to coordinate multidisciplinary plan of care. Recognizes complications or risk factors and initiates action to correct or reduce risk. Assigns duties to ancillary nursing personnel based on patients' needs, available staff, and unit needs. Identifies and interprets patient problems and develops a comprehensive patient care plan to resolve problems. Demonstrate, implementing a plan of care which reflects uniqueness of each patient. Assess patients' family health history. Gives direct patient care, evaluates all care given and patients' reactions, both emotionally and physically. Communicates appropriately with the patient's family. Provides care and makes accurate assessments in a timely manner and reports any findings to providers. Demonstrates adequate knowledge and competency in urgent situations (i.e. IV'S, medications, resuscitations) Identifies and researches med surge unit service problems and assists in solutions. Reports incidences and unusual occurrences such as violence, theft, med errors, etc. Take ownership and responsibility for addressing problems. (i.e., getting involved). Addresses concerns with manager and/or co-workers professionally and privately. Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff Assists in orientation of new personnel to the med surg unit. Attends and contributes to monthly stage meetings and in-service educational programs. Attends 80% of mandatory hospital in-services programs. Attends 50% of nurse's monthly meetings Maintains skills and knowledge through participation in educational programs, seminars & workshops and reading professional journals. Maintains current certifications, BKS, ACLS, RN License. Complete mandatory Kahuku Medical Center online competencies, and departmental competencies. Respects patients and families and involves them in clinical decision-making. Acknowledges a patient's presence immediately by making eye contact and introducing themselves. Demonstrates age-appropriate skills when communicating with patients and families. Incorporates complex comprehensive care for patient education/discharge planning. Complies with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, safety program requirements, corporate compliance program, standards of conduct, all applicable statutes, rules, and regulations of Kahuku Medical Center. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor and providers.Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
The med surge nurse must possess knowledge about healthcare in general and on specific levels to provide quality care to patients of all age. Must be prepared to treat a wide variety of illnesses and inquires, ranging from a fever to a heart attack. Must possess knowledge about med surg nursing in general and in relation to appropriate care. Ability to learn electronic medical record systems and documentation. Ability to comply with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. Strong time management skills with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.Education and Experience:
REQUIRED
BSN or associate degree in nursing, or diploma in nursing Current unencumbered State of Hawaii Nurse license Current BLS andACLS PREFERRED
Two years of experience in med surgePhysical Requirements:
Long periods of standing and walking. Occasional bending, stooping, reaching, and sitting. Continuous use of vision (corrected vision, depth perception, wide field of vision and color vision) Pushing and pulling up to 300 lbs. Lifting with assistance up to 150 lbs. Carrying up to 50 lbs. Ability to converse, read, write, understand, and instruct in English. Continuous attention to detail, concentration, and alertness, with frequent mathematical ability. Exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
