FTE JOB DUTIES
This position is located in the Psychiatric Acute - Adult department, or also known as the Behavioral Health department, of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) of Hawai'i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua'i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai'i. The HHSC Kaua'i Region encompasses Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and SMMH, both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua'i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities. The Behavioral Health department plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive mental health care to adults experiencing acute psychiatric crises. This department is dedicated to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of mental health disorders, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic interventions and individualized care plans. Key functions include crisis stabilization, medication management, and psychoeducation, all aimed at enhancing the patient's coping skills and overall well-being. The department also fosters a collaborative environment, engaging multidisciplinary teams that include psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers to ensure holistic care. Additionally, the department focuses on discharge planning and community reintegration, equipping patients with the necessary resources and support to maintain their mental health post-discharge. Under the immediate supervision of a higher-level Registered Professional Nurse (RPN), the RPN II receives orientation and guidance on nursing policies, procedures, and care techniques. The RPN II develops and implements nursing care plans for assigned patients or clients, provides nursing care, treatment services, and health education information, and performs other related duties as assigned. Additionally, this position is subject to cross-training and may float to assist other departments within the facility as needed. The role requires flexibility to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and may involve travel to various facilities within the region to meet operational and patient care needs. This position reports to the RPN V (Unit Nurse Manager), position number 20782, or their designee.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Candidates are required to provide evidence of any applicable education, licenses, certifications, etc.
EDUCATION
For nursing positions, applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.
EXPERIENCE
None required.
CERTIFICATIONS
A current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) is required at the time of employment.

Additionally, applicants must obtain the following certifications within six (6) months of employment: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the AHA and certification from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI).
LICENSURES
A current license to practice as a professional nurse (RN) in the State of Hawai'i. A current State of Hawai'i type #3 driver's license is preferred.
SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION
Possession of recent Psychiatric or Behavioral Health experience within the past two (2) years as an LPN or equivalent.
DESIRED SKILLS

Nursing theory and practice; biological, physical, social, and medicinal sciences as related to nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and developments in nursing.
ABILITY TO
Apply nursing theory and practices to planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret, and evaluate symptoms of the patient's condition and take appropriate action; direct the work of nursing assistants; work effectively and cooperatively with patients, family members, medical staff, and employees.

CITIZENSHIP AND RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT
Applicants must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under the federal law for unrestricted employment and at the time of appointment intend to reside in the State of Hawaii during the course of employment with the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

MEDICAL/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT
Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment physical examination, which includes drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, two-step tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for physical examinations, except the cost for drug screening, shall be borne by the applicant and not the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
CRIMINAL/BACKGROUND, CREDENTIALING CHECKS
Applicable checks will be conducted periodically, and any associated costs may be borne by the applicant. Applicable checks may include, but are not limited to, state and federal criminal history records, child abuse and neglect registry check, adult protective services registry and sex offender registry records, etc. If a job offer is made or employment is begun prior to completion of all applicable checks, any offer of employment or continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory return of all required checks.

If you do not submit your request within the twenty (20) days deadline, no Administrative Review will be conducted. Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection. If you do not agree with the Administrative Review, you may file a Formal Compliant and then, if you are still not satisfied, you can appeal to the HHSC Merit Appeals Board.
