Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW
(non-exempt): To plan and provide for total patient care through use of nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient needs. To direct and guide patient teaching, activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Functions within the scope of practice as set forth by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current Iowa RN license Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification A minimum of one year of experience in an acute setting required Oncology Certified Nurse preferred

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Consistently utilizes methods and knowledge to accurately assess all patient systems. Implements nursing actions safely and consistently with the plan of care. Incorporates patient and family teaching into the assessment and care of each patient. Evaluates outcomes of patient care and teaching Assessment, planning, intervention, including teaching and evaluation of patient care are reflected by completed and accurate documentation. Acts as liaison between physicians, care team, the patient, and the family. Serves as patient advocate. Demonstrates the ability to use critical thinking skills in prioritization, delegation, decision making and practicing safety. Verify orders and make staff aware of changes. Monitor lab results and report abnormal results to provider in a timely manner. Monitor for changes in patient condition and report to physicians. Monitor patient care to ensure all orders are being carried out and follow-up assessments are done. Knowledgeable of chemotherapy medication, regimens, administration, safe handling, disposal, and patient safety.
Assists with in-office patient care:
Rooms patients and takes vital signs, obtains history and nursing assessments. Assists or performs procedures as directed by the physician. Obtains consents. Communicates with other hospital departments to schedule tests and procedures. Calls pharmacies to order prescribed medications and refills as directed by provider. Returns call from patients, pharmacies, other providers in a timely manner. Processes home care orders, communicating with provider(s), outside agencies and patients as needed. Accurately, completely, legibly and in a timely manner documents findings and outcomes of all above interactions in patient's electronic health record. Performs telephone triage according to provider-approved protocols and schedules work-in appointments for acute patients. Contacts insurance companies for pre-certification. Collaborates with Central Stores to order and track medical supplies and equipment. Stocks medical supplies in treatment and exam rooms. Cleans rooms between patients and other patient care areas as needed. Collaborates with lab to maintain CBC machine and performs routine maintenance as required. Prepares patient charts and obtains necessary records as indicated. Assists office staff as needed. Performs general duties as needed or assigned. Attends all required meetings and in-services.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
: Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
