1 Description American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level II Trauma facility in Illinois, requiring Epic EMR experience and a background in surgical and total joint care. Details Acute care inpatient Med/Surg Telemetry unit on the 3rd floor of a hospital setting with 48 beds across two buildings Patient population includes post-surgical cases such as laminectomy, cervical fusion, joint replacements (total hips/knees), ostomies, hernia repair, fem-pop bypass, BKA/AKA, as well as patients requiring dialysis, sepsis management, and chronic pain management Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-6 on days and 1:5-6 on nights; LPNs are available, along with virtual admission and discharge nurses to assist Primary care nursing model is frequently used — candidates must be comfortable with this model RNs are required to interpret their own telemetry strips; a telemetry monitor tech is also present on the unit (Draeger monitors) RNs are required to titrate Heparin drips per protocol Respiratory therapy manages CPAP (home unit), Airvo, and BiPAP equipment as needed Charting is done in Epic EMR — Epic experience is required as the facility is undergoing an Epic conversion in Q2 2026 13-week contract with 12-hour day shifts (3 shifts per week, starting at 7:00 AM) Schedule is posted 6 weeks in advance; block scheduling is not guaranteed Every other weekend required (both Saturday and Sunday) Travelers are included in the holiday rotation with core staff No call or standby requirement Floating is limited to like units only; if floated to a higher acuity unit, traveler would serve in a helper role without a patient assignment Local candidates are accepted for this position Requirements Active IL RN license required Active BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required Minimum of 2 years of RN experience required, with at least 1 year of surgical nursing experience Total joint replacement experience is required Proficiency with Epic EMR is required Experience with PCA pumps, reversal agents (e.g., Narcan), and sepsis management required Experience with TPN, lipids, and narcotic administration required Level II Trauma facility experience preferred Additional Information Unit is fast-paced with heavy patient loads, receiving up to 8-12 surgical admissions per day in addition to managing discharges Charge nurses typically take a smaller patient assignment to assist the team; night shift charge may be covered by a house supervisor CNAs are available on the unit, though they may be pulled for sitter duties — night shift has greater CNA needs Orientation consists of one 12-hour shift on the hired unit and shift; the first day runs 12-14 hours to complete competencies, computer-based modules, and general orientation Black scrubs are required Candidates must be comfortable working in a primary care nursing model environment
