Elementary School Nurse Job Description Position Title Elementary School Nurse Reports To Building Principal and/or District Health Coordinator Position Summary The Elementary School Nurse promotes and protects the health and well-being of students and staff in order to support student learning and success. The school nurse provides direct health services, manages student health plans, responds to emergencies, administers medications, and serves as a liaison between families, school staff, and healthcare providers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide daily nursing care and first aid to students and staff. Assess and respond to student illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies. Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and school policy. Maintain accurate and confidential student health records. Develop and implement Individual Health Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans, and accommodations for students with medical needs. Monitor students with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, allergies, and ADHD-related medical needs. Ensure compliance with state immunization requirements and maintain immunization records. Conduct vision, hearing, and other required health screenings. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns and follow-up care. Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, and outside healthcare providers to support student health and learning. Assist in creating and maintaining a safe and healthy school environment. Educate students and staff on health, wellness, hygiene, and disease prevention. Participate in student support meetings, case conferences, and crisis response teams as needed. Maintain inventory and organization of health office supplies and medications. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health regulations and school policies. Prepare reports and documentation required by the district and state agencies. Qualifications Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the state of employment. CPR and First Aid certification required. Previous pediatric, public health, or school nursing experience preferred. Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Ability to work effectively with students, families, and staff. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift as needed throughout the school day. Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations. Frequent use of computers and medical equipment. Work Environment School setting with frequent interaction with students, staff, and families. Exposure to communicable illnesses and medical emergencies.
