Job Description

Overview We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse specializing in Addiction and Detox to join our behavioral health team. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical experience in substance use disorder treatment, medical detoxification, and co-occurring mental health conditions. This role offers the opportunity to provide exceptional, patient-centered care in a structured detox or residential treatment environment. The Registered Nurse will play a critical role in conducting comprehensive assessments, managing withdrawal symptoms, administering medications including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), and ensuring compliance with healthcare standards including HIPAA and accreditation guidelines. The ideal candidate demonstrates clinical expertise, sound judgment, and a commitment to recovery-oriented care. Duties Perform thorough patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, substance use history, withdrawal risk screening, and mental status evaluations. Monitor and manage withdrawal symptoms from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and other substances using evidence-based protocols Administer medications via oral, IM, subcutaneous, and IV routes, including detox protocols and MAT medications (buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone), while adhering to safe medication practices and aseptic technique. Provide IV therapy, hydration management, electrolyte monitoring, and supportive medical care during acute detoxification. Recognize and respond promptly to complications such as seizures, delirium tremens (DTs), respiratory depression, or overdose. Conduct laboratory specimen collection and coordinate diagnostic testing as indicated. Document patient care accurately and timely Collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, therapists, and case managers to develop individualized treatment and discharge plans focused on recovery and relapse prevention. Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment while implementing safety precautions and crisis intervention when needed. Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols, medication safety standards, and HIPAA confidentiality requirements. Educate patients and families on withdrawal expectations, relapse prevention strategies, overdose prevention (including naloxone education), medication compliance, nutrition, and chronic disease management related to substance use disorders. Requirements Valid RN license in the state of practice with current BLS certification Clinical experience in detoxification units, substance use treatment programs, behavioral health, emergency services, or medical-surgical settings preferred. Strong knowledge of addiction medicine principles, withdrawal management protocols, and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy/venipuncture, catheterization, and management of medically complex detox patients. Knowledge of infection control practices and HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality and safety. Ability to work effectively in high-acuity or high-pressure situations, including management of withdrawal emergencies. Strong understanding of anatomy & physiology and the physiological effects of substance use and withdrawal. Excellent therapeutic communication skills with the ability to support patients in early recovery with empathy and professionalism. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening in accordance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
