Essential Functions & Responsibilities Departmental Operations & Strategic Leadership Operational Oversight :
Provide strategic direction for the Emergency Department, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care that aligns with organizational goals and regulatory standards.
Care Coordination :
Collaborate actively with medical staff, nursing leadership, and ancillary departments to optimize throughput, care coordination, and the overall patient experience.
Metrics & Performance :
Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs)—including length of stay (LOS), left-without-being-seen (LWBS) rates, door-to-provider times, and patient satisfaction—to implement targeted improvement strategies.
Crisis & Disaster Readiness :
Direct emergency preparedness planning and coordinate disaster responses to ensure absolute departmental readiness for crisis and mass casualty situations.
Issue Resolution :
Respond promptly to patient care concerns, critical incidents, and operational disruptions with effective communication and definitive resolution.
Leadership, Staff Management & Development Mentorship & Evaluation :
Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Conduct performance evaluations, set actionable goals, and deliver constructive feedback.
Resource Optimization :
Schedule personnel effectively to match departmental needs and consult with senior leadership on proactive staffing strategies.
Clinical Support :
Step into a staff nurse role when operationally required, fulfilling all clinical competencies established for that role.
Financial Oversight & Quality Assurance Fiscal Management:
Partner with hospital leadership on strategic budgeting, resource allocation, and long-term planning, monitoring expenditures for cost-effective service delivery.
Technology & Innovation:
Evaluate and implement emerging healthcare technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
Compliance & Audits:
Maintain strict readiness for all regulatory, accreditation, and compliance requirements (including The Joint Commission, CMS, and state agencies), participating directly in audits and inspections.
Policy Development:
Formulate and execute departmental policies, protocols, and quality control practices to ensure accuracy, safety, and clinical consistency.
Qualifications & Requirements Education & Experience Education :
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field OR Seven (7) plus years of direct clinical experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree required.
Advanced Degree :
Master's Degree preferred.
Experience :
3-5 years of experience in a closely related clinical field (with a Bachelor's degree) required.
Leadership Experience :
3-5 years of previous healthcare leadership experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications RN License :
Registered Nurse state licensure and/or Compact State Licensure required.
BCLS :
Basic Life Support certification required.
ACLS :
Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required.
CEN :
Certified Emergency Room Nurse designation preferred.
TNCC :
Trauma Nursing Core Course certification preferred.
ENPC :
Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to build cross-functional relationships, delegate responsibilities, and lead interdisciplinary teams. Proficient in fostering a positive work environment centered on teamwork and continuous clinical improvement. Strong communication skills to effectively align with hospital leadership, staff, and external stakeholders. In-depth knowledge of emergency department best practices and healthcare regulatory compliance. Tech-savvy with proficiency in Google and Microsoft platforms, electronic healthcare software systems, and data analysis tools.
