Job Description

This position provides school health services to students, staff, families, and school visitors. This position works in a collaborative relationship with the school nurse. The Healthcare Aide works as a team member using good judgment according to health services policies and procedures. Duties may include but not be limited to:
  • Assist with the preparation of a variety of examinations pertaining to the health appraisal of students, including physical, vision and hearing examinations. Record health appraisal history and the results of health appraisal examinations.
  • Assist in typing and distributing reports concerning the findings of health appraisals and in health appraisal follow-up activities, especially for special education and Section 504 referrals.
  • Render first aid treatment to injured and ill students.
  • Sterilize, disinfect, and bandage minor cuts, abrasions and burns. Observe pupils for signs of shock and other emergency situations, and take appropriate remedial action following a predetermined procedure.
  • Take and record temperature of ill students, and report the results to the nurse.
  • Provide a quiet, comfortable, and calming atmosphere for ill and injured students.
  • Perform routine evaluations of student illness and injury situations, and determine the need for emergency, supervisory, or administrative assistance. Administer medication prescribed specifically for students by medical authority, following a closely controlled procedure.
  • Inventory and order nurse's office supplies under the supervision of the nurse.
  • Contact parents/guardians regarding ill or injured students.
  • Assist in cleaning and changing of ill students and physically involved students, and in the cleaning and disinfecting of the student health area. Maintain a variety of student records and records pertaining to the health office activities.
  • Supervise nurse's office when the nurse is absent.
  • Accompany students on field trips when medically necessary.
  • Any other health-care-related tasks as assigned by the nurse or principal.
