Job Description

Circulating Registered Nurse - Operating Room Float Job Description This circulating Registered Nurse position serves as a fill-in and float role for the operating floor, providing comprehensive support in all aspects of perioperative care outside of the surgical field. The nurse facilitates communication, coordinates supplies and equipment, maintains a safe and sterile environment, and assists the surgical team to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care. This role offers the opportunity to work in a specialty hospital setting with the potential to transition into a permanent position. Responsibilities Provide clear and timely communication between the surgical team inside the operating room and staff, patients, and families outside the operating room. Inform the Surgical Nursing Director of case progress and promptly report any unusual circumstances or concerns. Obtain all necessary supplies and equipment for each specific procedure, following physician preference cards and facility protocols. Ensure adequate amounts of surgical and anesthetic supplies are available in the operating room prior to scheduled cases. Check suction devices, lights, and other required equipment before each case to confirm proper functioning. Arrange operating rooms for specific operative procedures, ensuring that all instruments, equipment, and supplies are in place and ready for use. Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the Scrub Nurse at appropriate times during the procedure, accurately record counts, sign documentation immediately, and report any unresolved discrepancies to the OR Director. Receive faulty instruments from the Scrub Nurse, mark them appropriately, and return them to the workroom for repair or replacement. Demonstrate familiarity with supplies, equipment, and medications kept on the crash cart and assist effectively in the event of a cardiac event. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and promptly supply needed items to the sterile field to support smooth case progression. Prepare for upcoming cases by reviewing physician preference cards, verifying required instruments and supplies, and checking for any additional equipment needs. Receive specimens from the Scrub Nurse, place them in appropriate containers, label them accurately, and complete pathology slips according to facility policies. Decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment using approved detergents and disinfectant solutions in accordance with infection control standards. Sterilize instruments, equipment, and supplies using ultrasonic cleaners, steam sterilizers, and steris systems, following established protocols. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of ultrasonic units, sterilizers, and steris equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. Report malfunctioning equipment promptly to the Director of Surgical Nursing for evaluation and repair. Distribute sterile supplies and stock sterile storage areas, ensuring that all items are organized and readily available. Rotate sterile supplies regularly and remove outdated items to maintain compliance with safety and quality standards. Assist with receiving, unpacking, and storing supplies, maintaining accurate organization and inventory control. Dispose of contaminated needle containers and related sharps in designated red plastic contaminated trash bags in accordance with safety protocols. Order anesthesia supplies and medications using stock lists and established ordering procedures to maintain adequate inventory. Support overall operating floor operations by floating to different rooms and roles as needed, contributing to a collaborative and efficient surgical environment. Essential Skills Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas. At least 6 months of progressive work experience in an Operating Room, including both clinical and management-related skills. Demonstrated experience working in an operating room environment, including circulating responsibilities. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification, or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. Knowledge of operating room procedures, sterile technique, and perioperative nursing standards. Ability to perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts and to follow established safety protocols. Competence in using and checking operating room equipment such as suction devices, lights, ultrasonic cleaners, steam sterilizers, and steris systems. Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and families. Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond quickly in a fast-paced environment. Experience or familiarity with scrub tech, sterile processing, and surgery hospital workflows. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a clinical office environment is desirable. Experience in ENT, Orthopedics, Gastroenterology (GI), or General Surgery is a plus. Ability to speak and understand additional languages is beneficial. Experience in a specialty hospital setting is advantageous. Interest in transitioning to a permanent role in a surgical or specialty hospital environment. Work Environment This role is based in a specialty hospital environment focused on surgical care. The schedule typically consists of four 9-hour day shifts, Monday through Friday, with rotating days off, providing a structured weekday schedule. The nurse works primarily on the operating floor in a highly collaborative, team-oriented setting that includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, scrub nurses, and sterile processing staff. The environment involves frequent use of operating room technologies and equipment such as suction devices, surgical lights, crash carts, ultrasonic cleaners, steam sterilizers, and STERIS systems. The role requires adherence to strict sterile techniques, infection control practices, and safety protocols when handling instruments, supplies, and contaminated materials. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Leawood, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $43.00/hr.
