Job Description
The Hansen Elementary School is seeking an exceptional and dynamic candidate to serve as the school nurse for the upcoming school year beginning in August 2026. The school nurse will join a vibrant and supportive team that places a high priority on collaboration, creativity, flexibility, and commitment to the goals of the District and to our students, families and staff. The Hansen Elementary School is an inclusive community for all students and staff and serve over 475 students in grades K-5. JOB SUMMARY
The school nurse will coordinate the smooth and efficient operation of the school health services in order to realize the maximum positive impact on the education environment and student body.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Utilize the Nursing Process in providing care for students and staff for illness and/or injuries occurring during the school day
Provide direct emergency and first aid care to students and staff as needed
Adhere to MA state regulations relative to "responsibilities of the school nurse in the management of concussive injuries in the school setting…"
Maintain strict student/staff (patient) confidentiality at all times while consistently promoting professional nursing standards in individual practice, and with district policy/procedure and protocol.
Create and maintain Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) for students with special medical concerns
Maintain comprehensive electronic school health records
Serve as a liaison between school, home/family, and community-at-large
Recognize signs and symptoms of communicable diseases, and reports to the Board of Health/Department of Public Health per district protocol
Maintain Basic Life Support Instructor Certification
Supervise any assigned certified nursing assistants (CNAs)/health aides
Follow individual student safety plans, IEPs, 504s, health care plans, etc.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Strive to participate in professional development opportunities to remain current in the educational/nursing fields
Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, colleagues, and parents/guardians concerning the health progress of students
Participate in department meetings,school meetings, and parent meetings
Perform other duties specifically articulated within the collective bargaining agreement as assigned by building principal and/or District administration
QUALIFICATIONS
Maintains a valid Massachusetts DESE school nurse certification that is appropriate for the grade level and subject area assigned. (Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university)
Highly Qualified as per Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)
Licensure as a registered nurse by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN)
Proven ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including but not limited to: administrators, parents/guardians, teachers, students, other school staff, and visitors
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
Well-organized with excellent leadership abilities
Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills
Knowledge of electronic health record system, SNAP experience preferred
