Aug 28, 2026 Job Description SMEC is seeking substitute RN's to work in SMEC classrooms. The RN is responsible for the school health services for all enrolled students and administration of all health related activities. Work includes providing nursing care as well as advisement to staff on medical issues/changes, and ongoing parent/guardian contact. Experience in a pediatric setting and/or working with children with special needs strongly preferred. BSN and/or DESE licensure preferred. This is a per diem position. Licensed Registered Nurse in Massachusetts required. Local travel between programs is required to support students at different school buildings. Essential Duties:
  • Provides routine and emergency nursing care.
  • Prepares for, attends, and fully participates in staff meetings and assists in the orderly and efficient running of such meetings.
  • Demonstrates ongoing professional growth and skills consistent with current research and practice in education through in-services, coursework, evaluations, and online courses.
  • Accurately completes documentation related to student incidents/injuries, physical intervention, and 51A reports and/or DPPC under the guidance of teacher and/or administration.
  • Provide emergency care including notification of ambulance, physician, emergency care facility and member's emergency contact.
  • Monitor and document routine vital signs and weight as required.
  • Train and supervise all staff on various aspects of health and safety as required by DESE.
  • Document all nursing services in the student's medical record and maintains an accurate health record on each student.
  • Assist in the development of health service policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the implementation of the students educational activities in the classroom as instructed by the teacher.
  • Assesses and evaluates students' health,and the degree of significance of health problems on student educational progress.
  • Provides programs for the prevention and control of disease.
  • Coordinates health services with other health disciplines and community resources in order to fulfill a total health education program.
  • Observes school facilities and recommends modifications necessary to maintain optimum health and safety of students and school personnel.
  • Responds to frequently encountered health and social problems, such as but not limited to, child abuse and neglect, alcohol and other drug use, nutrition problems and eating disorders, and teen pregnancy.
  • Organizes, carries out and reports on mandated health screening programs and makes appropriate referrals and follow-up on vision, hearing, and scoliosis screen failures.
  • Acts as a resource to the student, parent, administrators, and teachers in matters pertaining to health.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and ability to administer and store medications appropriately, in keeping with school policy on administration of medication in the school.
  • Participates in team evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems.
  • Provide and document First Aid and illness care provided to staff and students and maintains First Aid supplies and equipment in an appropriate manner.
  • Screens all new students to ensure compliance with Immunization laws and school health record requirements, and provides documentation as applicable to host district school nurses.
  • Recommends exclusion and monitors readmission to school for students with infectious or communicable diseases.
  • Communicates with the student's PCP and/or specialists as required.
  • Assists with classroom activities under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Performs other nursing duties as assigned.
  • Complete all expected paperwork in a high quality manner within mandated/required timelines.
  • Shows respect and compassion for all members of the classroom and school environment including students, families, staff, and other community members.
  • Implements all aspects of the educational day, which may include activities of daily living (ADL's) such as toileting, feeding, transferring, self-care, and assistance with mobility including lifting.
  • Effectively utilizes any recommended adaptive equipment for individual students.
  • Participates in all required Collaborative in-services as well as those recommended by supervisors.
  • Communicate all significant occurrences to the appropriate supervisor in a respectful and timely manner.
  • Shares in the overall everyday activities necessary for operation of the program (inventorying, ordering, tracking as necessary, suggestions for program improvement, etc.)
  • Maintains an open, honest, and respectful relationship with parents and others involved with the student's success.
  • Maintains professional boundaries with parents and students.
  • Physical ability to perform physical restraints/escorts as needed.
  • Expected to read and adhere to all Employee Handbook policies.
