Job Description
Woburn Public Schools School Nurse The school nurse addresses and promotes the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of students and the school community. The school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse is an essential, professional member of the school community, providing skilled nursing care for students and staff.
Scope of Responsibilities:
Using sound clinical knowledge and judgment, adhering to the Nurse Practice Act, pertinent regulations governing nursing practice in Massachusetts, the guidelines and standards of care established by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MDESE), and in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Public Schools of Woburn Public Schools.Reports to:
Woburn Public School Nurse Leader and School Principal Performance responsibilities: Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates plans for student care, including Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs) Provides a nurturing, welcoming, trusting, and safe atmosphere for students Provides health-related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings Maintains confidentiality and complies with FERPA, HIPAA, district policies, and professional standards Documents nursing care, interventions, communication, and student health information in the district's electronic health record system Maintains accurate and up-to-date student health records Collaborates with staff and administration to promote a healthy and safe school environment Monitors immunization compliance, manages communicable diseases, and oversees infection control measures Provides nursing services to students in general and special education programs, including medication administration, daily health management, and medically prescribed interventions Monitors student responses to treatments and interventions Oversees medication administration, healthcare procedures, and delegated healthcare tasks in accordance with district policy, state law, and professional practice guidance Oversees mandated screenings, referrals, and follow-up care coordination Participates in school safety planning, crisis response, bullying prevention efforts, and emergency preparedness activities Participates in school- and district-based teams, including Special Education, Crisis Response, and Wellness Committees Participates in re-entry meetings and transition planning as needed Develops and distributes Medical Emergency Response Plans Provides required staff training, including epinephrine auto-injector administration, standard precautions, and classroom health emergency response Collaborates with local public health departments and community healthcare providers Participates in district nursing meetings and collaborates with school nurse peers to promote communication, consistency, and professional practiceQualifications:
Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts Bachelor's Degree in Nursing CPR/AED Certified Three years' employment as a Registered Nurse in Pediatrics, Community Health, or other relevant clinical nurse setting is preferred Maintain DESE Licensure for MA School Nurses Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write professional emails, contribute to special education evaluations, and develop Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs)Terms of Employment:
