The College Health Nurse is a member of an interdisciplinary collaborative care team of professionals within the Wellness Center. The mission of college health nursing is to enhance students' higher education experience by modifying and removing health-related barriers to learning, promoting optimal wellbeing, and empowering students to be self-directed and well-informed consumers of health care services. The College Health Nurse applies the nursing process to provide developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive patient-centered health care services and facilitates referral to appropriate community healthcare providers. The College Health Nurse serves as the clinical liaison between the Wellness Center and LifeBridge Health Medical Group Primary Care. Additional responsibilities include the management of pre-entrance student health requirements, medical supply inventory management, and health education programming for the campus community. The College Health Nurse will be scheduled for 44 weeks during the academic year. It is expected that up to five days will be needed during the summer to allow for consultation regarding the incoming class. Key Responsibilities -Provides student-centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive nursing care and facilitates referral to community healthcare providers. Consistently maintains a high standard of nursing care in alignment with Maryland Nurse Practice Act and Wellness Center protocols. Conduct comprehensive assessments and apply the full nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation). Provide direct care including triage, first aid, point-of-care testing, treatment of acute and chronic conditions, illness and injuries, and health education under standing medical orders. Coordinate referrals and collaborate with primary care providers, specialists, urgent care, and community health resources. Support students in navigating healthcare systems and accessing campus and community wellness services. Monitor and follow up on students with identified health needs through campus reporting systems and outreach programs. Identify and appropriately refer students to counseling services for mental health and substance use concerns. Takes decisive action in emergent/urgent medical situations. Communicate effectively with campus stakeholders and, where appropriate, families, while maintaining compliance with legal and privacy requirements. Maintains current CPR/AED certification. -Maintains student health records Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive student health records within the electronic health system (Titanium). Review and verify pre-entrance health documentation to ensure compliance with institutional immunization and health requirements. Communicate clearly with students via email, phone, and in person regarding health requirements and compliance issues; liaise with medical providers as needed to resolve discrepancies. Ensure full compliance with FERPA and HIPAA regulations, maintaining strict confidentiality of all student health information and releasing records only in accordance with legal and institutional policies. Partners with the Assistant Dean of Student Health and Wellness in completing regular chart audits to support quality care and accurate documentation. -Provides health education and wellness programs for students. Serves as an advocate for student wellbeing and the eight dimensions of wellness. Design and deliver targeted health education and wellness programs that meet the needs of the student population. Collaborate with Wellness Center staff, Campus Life, and other departments to expand and enhance wellness initiatives. Coordinate campus-based health clinics (e.g., immunization, STI testing, gynecological care, nutrition) in partnership with local health organizations and providers. Identify and address barriers to health equity within the student community and works to address them. -Manages inventory of supplies for Student Health Services. Responsible for purchasing all medical supplies (including first aid and medical supplies, point-of-care testing, equipment, OTC medications, condoms, and health promotion materials). Ensure timely and accurate processing of invoices and related administrative documentation. Monitor and maintain inventory levels, including stocking exam rooms, tracking expirations, and minimizing waste. Maintain clinical equipment to ensure cleanliness, proper function, and compliance with sterilization standards. Oversee the safe handling, packaging, and disposal of hazardous waste in accordance with institutional policies. Participate in required safety trainings and ensure compliance with OSHA standards. -Performs other duties as assigned. On-call duty and availability outside of normal business hours may be necessary at times for urgent health-related situations or wellness programming Contributes to departmental, divisional, and college efforts including occasional attendance of required events that occur outside of typical working hours. Participates in staff development programs as provided by McDaniel College, Campus Life, and the Wellness Center. Creates reports, documents, policies, procedures, and assists with the evaluation of Student Health Services. Requirements:
Education:
graduate of an accredited Associate of Arts, Diploma or Baccalaureate nursing program. Must possess and maintain a current license with the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. Two or more years of professional nursing practice. Experience in school/college health services, adolescent medicine, or ambulatory/emergency nursing desirable. Knowledge of the process required to formulate nursing objectives, the process of administering nursing care and the procedures involved in the accurate recording of patient care. Current CPR/AED certification. Knowledge and understanding of human development and health concerns of the late adolescent/young adult group is essential. Demonstrates cultural humility and experience in addressing health disparities and supporting the specific health and wellness needs of individuals from marginalized populations. Enjoys working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions. Able to function independently while operating effectively within a collaborative team environment. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, email, and utilizing an electronic medical record. Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents. Additional Information:
