To Be Determined Job Description Elementary School Nurse RSU 57 Vacancy will be posted until a suitable candidate is found. Qualifications Must hold a current license in the State of Maine as a Registered Professional Nurse Bachelor of Science degree (four-year) from an accredited institution Valid provisional or professional state certificate to serve as a school nurse Completed fingerprinting in accordance with school requirements Minimum of two years of nursing experience in pediatrics, community health, or as a school nurse Holds current BLS certification Reports to Building administration and superintendent Job Goal To provide health services that ensure the health and safety of students and staff in RSU 57. Essential Functions Ability to create and maintain positive relationships with students, school personnel, parents, and citizens within scope of practice Ability to collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to maintain high-quality services Demonstrates sound judgment and effective communication skills Respects and protects the confidentiality of students, staff, and families Performance Responsibilities Works as a member of the district health services team within the scope of individual training Understands and complies with school district policies and procedures, state statutes, and limitations Provides health assessments; develops and implements health plans for students Provides care for illness and injury to students in accordance with written protocols Follows standard health practices for school settings as listed by the School Health Manual and Maine Department of Education Develops an Individualized Health Plan (IHP) or Medical 504 for each student with special health care needs requiring nursing assessment, intervention, or supervision. This includes health assessments, completion and maintenance of student health plans, interventions (including administration of medication), and documentation of student health records Educates staff regarding emergency measures required until medical help is available Implements the school medication policy and procedures Promotes control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases Provides health information to assist students and families in making health-related decisions in the school setting Participates in health aspects of kindergarten pre-registration (if appropriate) Participates in medical clearances (physicals, allergies, previous medical conditions, etc.) (if appropriate) Serves as a health liaison between school, home, and the community Works effectively with individuals, public and private agencies, and other community groups to ensure student health needs are met Ensures that necessary and appropriate medical/health-related resources are available to all persons responsible for providing health care before a child is placed in the classroom May be called upon to serve as a resource person for classroom teachers on health issues or as a resource for the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Upon request, the nurse will incorporate the care plan into the IEP May be responsible for case management of Medical 504s, as appropriate Prepares the budget for school health supplies and first aid kits for school settings Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned Legal and Ethical Duties Maintains confidentiality related to all aspects of student performance and written or oral records Demonstrates respect for the legal and human rights of students Meets and follows all laws and regulations at both the state and federal levels Follows health and safety procedures established by the district Arrives and departs punctually, notifying appropriate personnel about absences and coverage Demonstrates loyalty, dependability, integrity, and other ethical standards Follows the chain of command for various administrative procedures for student or program concerns Observes all RSU 57 policies and related school procedures Terms of Employment Salary, work year, and working conditions are established by the RSU 57 School Board.
