Job Description

Under general supervision, the Public Health Nurse plays a key role in safeguarding and improving the health of the community by providing compassionate, evidence-based care across a wide variety of public health programs. This position offers a unique opportunity to make lasting impact on individuals, families, and entire populations-especially those who are underserved or at a greater risk for poor health outcomes. A Public Health Nurse works independently and as part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive nursing services and assess health needs, prevent and control communicable diseases, deliver immunizations, provide health education, and connect clients to resources that support overall well-being. The role spans clinical, community, and home-based settings, offering professional variety and meaningful client interaction every day. The Public Health Nurse is a key member of the team in supporting health equity, reducing disparities, and strengthening community resilience. Responsibilities include assessment, health education, disease prevention, counseling, case management, and support of public health initiatives. This is a mission-driven career path for nurses who want to combine clinical expertise with social impact. Public Health Nurses are community advocates, educators, and frontline responders who work not only to treat illness but also to prevent it-promoting health equity and resilience at every level. In the event of a public health emergency, the Public Health Nurse is essential to the response effort and may be assigned to specialized duties or perform emergency response activities, both within and outside Muskegon County. 1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Nursing; OR Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Applied Science (AAS) Nursing; AND Two (2) years of work experience in Community Health, Public Health, Nursing Administration, Health Education, or Population Health. 2. Possess and maintain a licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan, 3. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES A
Public Health Nurse performs generally sedentary work activities requiring the lifting of objects weighing thirty-five (35) pounds or less.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
An employee in this class generally works at the Public Health Department, various community sites, or in client homes. Travel to various locations within the County may be required. This employee will be exposed to blood and bodily fluids.

HF050 EVALUATION CONTENT
The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.
APPLICANT REVIEW PROCEDURE
Any applicant is entitled to a review of any determination or action taken by the County regarding the applicant's employment application. Inquiries should be directed to the County Human Resources Department. PURPOSE The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
