School Nurse
Qualifications:
1. A bachelor of science in nursing and hold a valid North Carolina license as a registered nurse. Must hold a national school nurse certification or be able to obtain national certification within three years. Preference will be given to applicants with experience or course of study in community health/public health nursing and/or pediatric nursing. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Reports to: School Principals; Assistant Superintendent of Personnel, Policy and Student Services

Job Goal:
To assist students in acquiring and maintaining a desirable state of physical and mental well being which is vital to the learning process.
Performance Responsibilities:
Plans for identification of children with specific health needs; refers and monitors children with specific health needs. Assists administration in providing a safe and healthy school environment. Assists administration in ensuring students are in compliance with current immunization laws for school attendance. Reviews all Pre-K and Kindergarten records for compliance; provides instructions to teachers if necessary. Assists with completion of NC State Report for Pre-K and Kindergarten. Reviews all newly enrolled students records for compliance; provides instructions to teachers if necessary. Assists in programs for the prevention of disease and the promotion of health. Help with providing a plan for emergency care of students who become ill or injured during the school day. Reviews all medications checking compliance and instructions. Serves as a consultant to administrators, teachers, parents and students in reference to student health. Reviews all chronic disease students, check for Individual Health Plan. Serves as a resource by providing and interpreting materials for health and safety education (5th grade Family Life, Hygiene, Communicable diseases, nutrition, first aid, etc.) Cooperates in teacher education in health related matters (Medical procedures such as epi-pen and catheterizations, Immunization law, Bloodborne Pathogens, Pediculosis, etc.). Utilizes opportunities for health counseling and education for students, staff and community. Assists in the identification with assessments in the medical history, screening procedures and referrals. Assists in planning and implementing services appropriate for pupils whose physical, mental and social deviations have educationally significant dimensions. Helps maintain health records. Helps maintain documentation of nursing services provided to students. Does vision/dental/Pediculosis screening by requests from parents/teachers. Interprets the school health program to the family and community to bring about a closer liaison between home and school in all health matters. Interprets student's health needs to teachers and parents. Assists the administration in the promotion and maintenance of desirable pupil attendance practices. Acquaints school personnel with community health problems and community resources. Coordinates and participates in activities with other agencies such as Carteret County Health Department/Carteret General Hospital Wellness Program. Plans for continuous evaluation of professional skills and school health services. Terms of Employment:
Ten month year/Contract/FLSA Exempt Starting Salary and/or
Grade:
Salary based on state salary scale.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Carteret County Public School Board policy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information. Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions. Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate with school personnel, students, and parents while complying with the confidentiality requirements in local, state, and federal policies and statutes. Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, such as, walk, lift, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch and key requiring repetitive motions.
