1 Description American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring a minimum of 2 years of cardiac floor experience and ACLS certification, working night shifts in a high-acuity cardiac and vascular step-down environment. Details Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Step-Down) in an acute care hospital setting Complex cardiac and vascular patient population including Atrial Fibrillation, CHF, ACS, CAD, valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, PVD/PAD, carotid stenosis, and vasculitis Special procedures include CABG, AVR, MVR, TAVR, Mitral Clip, LAAO (Watchman), VATS, carotid endarterectomy, FEM-POP bypass, amputations, post-cath, post-DCCV, post-electrophysiology, and pacemaker placements Patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:4 for surgical step-down, 1:5-6 for lower acuity Night shift only: 3x12-hour shifts (18:45-07:15) 4 weekends required per 4-week period (flexible) Floating follows unit rotation — travelers are not first to float Special equipment includes arterial lines, Doppler, bladder scanner, EKG, femoral sheaths, TR band, Fem-stop, chest tubes, and epicardial pacing wires
EMR:
Epic (documentation); Pyxis (medication); SBAR (communication) 13-week minimum contract length; extensions up to 26 weeks considered Local candidates are accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility Requirements Active NC or Compact RN license required (may be submitted with license pending) Current BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required Minimum 2 years of cardiac floor experience required Prior travel experience required unless the candidate has 24+ months of cardiac experience Required clinical skills: cardiac telemetry, PCU/DOU/IMC/step-down care, sheath removal, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, post-MI care, pre/post cardiac cath care, cardiac drip management (including titration), chest tube management (Emerson/Pleuravac), external CPAP/BiPAP, nasal cannula, and non-invasive airway management Must pass an EKG competency test prior to start Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 12 months are highly preferred for consideration Additional Information Preferred skills include arterial line management, wound care/wound vac, and charge nurse experience Orientation consists of 24 hours of unit orientation plus 8-10 hours of pre-start online modules (completed via online learning, Zoom, webinar, or in-person classes) Navy scrubs required Candidates must be prepared to work as part of a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters Mid-contract consolidation to a centralized office location is possible, with reassignment to units as needed Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays No RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation; up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved thereafter provided it does not fall on a holiday Previous permanent, PRN, or EP staff employees of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required Travel pairs are allowed, provided each clinician has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules First-time travelers may be considered if they have 24 or more months of cardiac experience
