Position Title:
School Nurse Summary:
The school nurse plays a vital role in supporting the health, academic success, and lifelong well-being of students. This specialized nursing position focuses on promoting student health and safety, preventing illness and injury, and providing care coordination and case management. School nurses act as leaders in creating healthy school environments, responding to health concerns, and collaborating with families, staff, and community partners to support student wellness and success.
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local health regulations, laws, and district policies.
  • Identify and report safety hazards or unsanitary conditions within the school.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential health records and immunization compliance.
  • Assess, plan, intervene, evaluate, and refer health-related issues for students.
  • Manage daily school health operations.
  • Implement communicable disease monitoring and outbreak response protocols.
  • Develop and lead school health policies and procedures.
  • Administer care in alignment with physician orders and nursing standards.
  • Ensure confidentiality and uphold public health and education laws.
  • Delegate nursing-related tasks in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act (especially
NURS 404
).
  • Maintain current nursing knowledge through continuing education and training.
  • Work autonomously while aligning with professional nursing standards.
  • Serve as a liaison among students, families, medical providers, and school staff.
  • Act as a health resource for staff and students, including in the classroom.
  • Participate on IEP and 504 teams as a health expert.
  • Contribute to school-wide teams identifying students at risk for health and psychosocial concerns.
