Immediately Job Description Substitute School Nurse An ESS substitute school nurse (RN) assists in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for students by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools. Job Skills and Knowledge
Knowledge of:
  • Including but not limited to Part Ed 311, Nurse Practice Act, New Hampshire
RSA 326-B
12 Scope of Practice, Registered Nurse as revised.
  • Confidentiality and Public School Health Records including but not limited to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability, and the confidentiality and ethics required by one's nursing license. Skill in:
  • Clinical judgment in providing case management services.
  • Providing exceptional customer service to staff and students.
  • Planning and organizing work.
  • Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to:
  • Provide leadership in promoting health and safety, including a healthy environment.
  • Provide quality health care and intervene with actual and potential health problems.
  • Collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community, including difficult and emotional situations.
  • Maintain calm demeanor in a stressful environment.
  • Exhibit strong attention to detail.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Exhibit independent judgement in the interrelation and application of standard practices and procedures.
  • Learn and interpret rules, regulations, laws, instructions and procedures.

  • Licensed to Practice as a registered, professional nurse in New Hampshire, a minimum of two years nursing experience in a discipline related to child health within the last five years; a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or its equivalent; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities:
The School Nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning in individual students and promoting the optimal level of wellness for students. The nurse assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and/or referral activities; serves as the direct link between physicians, families, and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care for students; provides relevant instruction, counseling and guidance to students, parents, staff and others concerning health related issues; upholds professional standards, the Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to nursing practice; and adheres to District policies and administrative guidelines.
  • Openly communicate with building administrators and teachers.
  • Conduct health screenings - vision, hearing, dental, height, weight, scoliosis, BP, and others as required.
  • Evaluate and assess health needs of students.
  • Provide health counseling for chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention, and positive lifestyles.
  • Evaluate and monitor communicable disease and nuisance diseases.
  • Implement and monitor student's compliance with state immunization laws.
  • Provide emergency first aide to students and staff.
  • Maintain accurate records on daily care and medications given at school.
  • Act as resource for and interpret medical information to school faculty and staff.
  • Recommend and assist to implement modifications of school programs to meet student's health needs.
  • Maintain, evaluate and interpret cumulative health data and records.
  • Participate as health specialist on teams to determine any health or developmental interference with learning; collaborate in the writing and monitoring of the health component of the Individualized Education Program and 504 Plans.
  • Act as a liaison between home and school regarding health concerns, including home visits as needed, taking health histories and assessing long-term illnesses.
  • Participate in parent-nurse and parent-teacher conferences as needed.
  • Provide information for community resources.
  • Make referrals to appropriate medical personnel or community agency; follow up on referrals to assure that care or correction is obtained.
  • Serve as liaison for recording and reporting child abuse to Child Protective Services.
  • Assist teachers with health-related classroom presentations (dental, safety, growth and development at puberty, etc.).
  • Provide individual health education in interactions with students.
  • Make recommendations to school administrators on health and emergency policies to promote a healthy and safe school environment.
  • Provide information to parents regarding child growth and development, health needs of children, and parenting skills.
  • Implement school dental program and any other special school health services programs.
  • Contribute directly to school health education program by developing and implementing health curriculum with the classroom teacher.
  • Serve on health curriculum development committees.
  • Coordinate school and community health activities and educational programs.
  • Provide teacher/staff in-service education on health related topics.
  • Serve on school Crisis Team.
  • Write, update and manage health care plans.
  • Write, update and manage emergency care plans.
  • Share pertinent health information as appropriate with building staff for student safety. Working Environment
  • Physical demands include: occasional stooping, bending, standing for sustained periods, walking, moving about, lifting, raising objects lower/higher/horizontally.
Frequent reaching, extending hand(s) and arm(s), and fine finger dexterity. Substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles. Exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
