To Be Determined by Facility Position Summary We are seeking a compassionate and clinically skilled Registered Nurse (RN) to provide comprehensive healthcare services within a correctional healthcare setting. The RN will be responsible for delivering direct patient care, administering medications and treatments, conducting health assessments, responding to medical emergencies, and collaborating with healthcare providers and correctional staff to ensure safe, effective, and compliant patient care. This role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent assessment skills, and the ability to work effectively in a secure correctional environment while maintaining professionalism, safety, and confidentiality. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Care Perform comprehensive nursing assessments of inmates/residents upon intake, during sick call, and as clinically indicated. Administer medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with physician/provider orders and facility protocols. Assist physicians, nurse practitioners, and other Licensed Independent Providers during examinations and treatment procedures. Monitor patient conditions, evaluate treatment responses, and communicate significant findings to healthcare providers. Provide emergency nursing care and initiate appropriate interventions during medical emergencies. Assess inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries and coordinate referrals to emergency departments, specialists, or outside healthcare facilities as necessary. Medication Management Conduct medication administration and pill call activities according to established procedures. Maintain accurate medication records and documentation. Monitor medication effectiveness, side effects, and adverse reactions. Ensure compliance with pharmacy regulations and controlled substance requirements. Assist with formulary management and pharmacy utilization reviews. Care Coordination Coordinate healthcare services with physicians, specialists, hospitals, contract providers, and community healthcare agencies. Monitor inmate/resident hospitalizations and facilitate continuity of care following discharge. Assist in managing chronic illnesses and monitoring high-risk or catastrophic medical conditions. Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and case management activities. Documentation and Compliance Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential medical records. Document assessments, treatments, interventions, and patient responses in accordance with facility and regulatory requirements. Prepare reports, logs, statistical summaries, and operational documentation as required. Ensure compliance with correctional healthcare standards, accreditation requirements, and applicable state and federal regulations. Assist with medical record audits and quality assurance initiatives. Leadership and Supervision Provide guidance and oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), and unlicensed healthcare personnel. Support quality improvement activities and healthcare audits. Participate in staff orientation, training, and educational programs. Foster a collaborative and professional healthcare environment. Safety and Security Adhere to all correctional facility safety and security procedures. Monitor healthcare areas for potential contraband and security risks. Observe inmate/resident behavior and report concerns appropriately. Participate in emergency response efforts, incident investigations, and safety initiatives as required. Patient Education Provide health education and counseling to individuals and groups. Promote disease prevention, wellness, and self-care practices. Educate patients regarding medications, treatment plans, and chronic disease management. Required QualificationsEducation Graduate of an accredited nursing program with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Diploma in Nursing, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Licensure Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment. Valid Driver's License. Experience Minimum one (1) year of professional nursing experience preferred. Previous experience in correctional nursing, emergency nursing, medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, behavioral health, public health, or community health nursing is highly preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills. Ability to recognize and respond effectively to medical emergencies. Knowledge of nursing standards, infection control practices, and medication administration procedures. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries. Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical documentation systems. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Ability to function effectively in a secure correctional healthcare environment. Work Environment Secure correctional facility, detention center, or residential correctional setting. Frequent exposure to medical emergencies and potentially challenging patient behaviors. Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and responding to emergency situations. Must comply with all facility safety, security, and operational procedures.
