POSITION SUMMARY
Provides professional nursing care for patients in the medical, surgical, telemetry, intensive care and pediatric unit according to established standards and practices. Supervises support personnel assigned to the medical surgical department.

OF TIME PERFORMING DUTY A
Demonstrates clinical competency in medical/surgical and critical care. B Supports the hospital medication administration competency programs, and seeks professional growth through continuing education, and/or advanced professional certifications (RNC, CCRN, etc.) C Demonstrates appropriate judgment in notifying/communicating with physicians. D Admits/discharges patients to the med/surg department according to department/hospital policy. E Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care. F Utilizes techniques of infection control, including proper hand washing and observing standard precautions when starting IV's, or as circumstances warrant. G Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care. H Performs competently during emergency, busy or otherwise stressful situations in the med/surg department. I Competently directs, supervises and delegates activities of licensed and ancillary staff assigned to the med/surg/ICU unit. J Documents patient care and procedures/interventions accurately and thoroughly in accordance with hospital standards. K Consistently monitors and/or oversees the monitoring of the telemetry station. L Consistently makes rounds with the physicians and nursing staff. M Monitors the medical condition of patients and reports changes to appropriate personnel. N Prepares, administers and records medications with knowledge and understanding in accordance with policy and procedure. O Performs preoperative, postoperative, and relevant health teaching for patients and families. P Responsible for informing nurse manager of nursing activities, needs, problems and unusual events. Q Demonstrates technical competency through annual equipment certification, attending manufacturers' sponsored in-services, and additional training as required R Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards. S Demonstrates skill and accuracy in hospital computer application. T Actively participates in the review of policies and procedures for the med/surg department annually. U Supports the department by attending and constructively contributing to staff or other meetings as able/necessary. V Accepts the need to float when staffing dictates. W Maintains a clean, organized and safe working environment in both patient care areas and the nursing station. X Participates in ordering, stocking and inventory of departmental supplies to ensure appropriate items are readily available for patient care needs. Y Maintains confidentiality of all patient/staff information. Z Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM EDUCATION
High school diploma or equivalent Completion of an accredited school of nursing
PREFERRED EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science in Nursing-BSN or higher
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
Active Nevada Registered Nursing license or Interim Permit from Nevada State Board of Nursing Current
BLS ACLS
certification within 6 months of employment PALS certification within 6 months of employment Procedural sedation course within one year of employment
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Specialty Nursing Certification in area of practice.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner. Ability and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel. Able to communicate clearly and tactfully with patients, their families, and co-workers. Must be a role model of a professional nurse.

Support personnel assigned to the unit.
