SUMMARY:
Performs specific patient care activities and non-professional services, under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, necessary to meet personal, physical and emotional needs of the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult or geriatric patient and family, consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the Nursing Department and Medical Center Administration. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate date to the age of patient served on the nursing unit or by patient care department.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS
Responsibility I 1. Assists in the delivery of patient care as a nursing team member by performing, in a prompt and appropriate manner, specific patient care tasks as directed by the nurse in charge. 1.1 Assists with admission, transfers, discharges and transports patients as requested. 1.2 Obtains and records T.P.R., pulse oximetry, B/P, finger stick blood glucose accurately and reports abnormalities to primary nurse promptly. 1.3 Answers call lights for patients in a prompt and courteous manner. 1.4 Assists patients with appropriate hygiene/ADL activities. 1.5 Observes, measures and records accurately intake and output on appropriate records. 1.6 Integrates principles of growth and development into patient care. 1.7 Adheres to medical center infection control practices, policies and performance improvement practices at all times. 1.8 Adheres to established safety and security precautions at all times. 1.9 Performs appropriate tasks in all code situations (CPR, obtaining equipment, etc. under the direction of the Code Stat Team). 1.10 Collects, prepares, labels and delivers specimens to lab in a timely manner per procedure, as needed. 1.11 Provides non-pharmacolgic measures to alleviate pain/discomfort under the direction of the
RN. 1.12
Provides patient care in accordance with approved policies and procedures. 1.13 Assists in initiating and discontuing cardiac, intra-cranial and hemodynamic monitoring. 1.14 Performs and records finger stick blood glucose monitoring accurately per medical center policy and procedure, and reports values to RN promptly. 1.15 Performs phlebotomy competently, as requested. 1.16 Obtains EKG tracing, as requested, and submits to RN or provider in a timely fashion. Responsibility II 2. Reports to primary nurse and/or charge nurse any requests, complaints or problems of the patient. 2.1 Reports special care needs to the primary nurse for integration into the patient's care plan. 2.2 Reports unusual conditions and complaints to primary nurse promptly. 2.3 Reports promptly any complaints of patient pain/discomfort to the primary nurse. 2.4 Reports patient's concerns regarding any aspect of hospitalization and discharge to the primary nurse for integration into the patient's plan of care. 2.5 Reports all incidents and/or potentially hazardous situations to Nurse Manager, or designee, at the time of occurrence or discovery.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or
GED. AHA BLS
provider certification required. 1 Year PCT experience or other comparable position in an acute care setting.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
General knowledge of high school subject matter including sciences, simple medical procedures / terminology, and office equipment.
License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:
BLS certification is required.
