The RN delegates and coordinates patient care, based upon a documented assessment of the patient's/resident's needs. The RN supervises the care provided by individuals such as licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians/state tested nursing assistants/nurse aides, medical assistants, and etc., if applicable. Department Summary SICU and is located on the second floor, east wing of the Memorial Building and has 18 private rooms with one designated for Airborne Infectious Isolation. Rooms are equipped with hardwire monitoring with the capability to perform acute dialysis. The Surgical Intensive Care Unit is designed for care specializing in trauma, thoracic, neurosurgery, orthopedics, major abdominal surgeries including urology, and post-airway management surgeries. The care may include pre-operative care, post-operative care, post anesthesia recovery phase, or deteriorating clients from step-down or medical-surgical units. Common admissions include but are not limited to: 1. Neurosurgery
- Including but not limited to emergent craniotomies, evacuation of subdural hematomas with drain insertion, insertion of intra-cranial pressure monitoring or ventriculostomies. 2. Orthopedics-Including but not limited to post hip/knee arthroplasties, cervical and lumbar laminectomies. 3. Major Abdominal/Urology
- Including but not limited to total abdominal hysterectomies, s/p C-Section complications, colectomies with colostomies or ileostomies, perforated bowel with sepsis, and TURP's with continuous bladder irrigation.
4. Any nose or throat complications intra-operatively or preventative care post-operatively-thyroidectomy or tracheostomy. 5. Other common admissions include but not limited to respiratory distress, sepsis, neurological change, acute hemodynamic changes, Lifebanc patients preparing for donation, and post anesthesia recovery of surgical patients. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred. Current, active licensure as a Registered Nurse through the Ohio Board of Nursing. Obtain and maintain current American Heart Association (AHA) training in Basic Life Support (BLS) utilizing Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) is required. Certification preferred for RNs meeting applicable certification eligibility requirements. Membership in professional nursing organization preferred. Department Qualifications Obtain and maintain current American Heart Association (AHA) training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS utilizing Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) is required. Obtain and maintain current National Institute's of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Certification required within 90 days of hire. Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification obtained and maintained, demonstrating competency in evidencebased trauma assessment, intervention, and patient stabilization. Training classes are proved by Trauma Services following orientation. Certified Nurse in Critical Care (CNCC) certification must be obtained within six months of hire and maintained in accordance with organizational standards. Training classes are sponsored by the Education and Development Department. Complete required orientation for position. Skills Proficient computer skills to complete tasks as required. Must be organized, able to effectively prioritize tasks and exhibit appropriate time management skills. Must be detail oriented while focusing on safe practices and quality care. Demonstrates effective communication. Effective appropriate and professional interactions with colleagues/physicians, patients and visitors. Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and students. Integrates research findings into practice. Responsible for timely review of emails, department communications and applicable learning assignments and completion as applicable. Department Responsibilities & Expectations Working Conditions Meal and break times are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage. Shifts are scheduled or changed due to the staffing needs of the unit/department based upon volume and acuity. Work weekends and holidays as assigned or as applicable based on department needs.
