JOB SUMMARY
The Certified School Nurse position is to promote good health practices through education, evaluations and assessment of district needs as they pertain to the student and staff. The Certified School Nurse will perform duties in accordance to state law regarding nursing, and in accordance with district/state board of education and state department of health policies/procedures. The Certified School Nurse must hold a valid driver's license.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from accredited nursing program
Valid RN/Registered Nursing license in Pennsylvania
Candidates must hold a current minimum certification in CPR
Certified in Pennsylvania by the PDE as an Educational Specialist I by completing an approved school nurse certification program
Required to earn 24 additional credits to obtain permanent certification (Education Specialist II)
POSITION FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Determines the health status of student by means of health appraisal
Provides care to students and staff who have been injured or who present with illnesses
Performs general assessment of student health
Performs and/or oversees mandated school health screenings including height, weight, BMI, vision, and hearing and completes all re-screenings, referrals, and follow-up where applicable
Assumes responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care
Performs objective appraisal of personal hygiene and physical appearance, offering intervention and/or making arrangements for the family and student to receive support and resources available at school and/or through referral to community resources/ agencies which may include but is not limited to access to laundry facilities, laundry supplies, showering facilities, and/or local community resources
Evaluates immunization status and health history
Assesses emotional and mental health in conjunction with other health professionals and associated personnel such as school psychologist and guidance counselor
Perform special screenings whenever possible (may include, but is not limited to blood pressure, nuisance disease inspections, nutritional surveys, scoliosis detection, etc).
Provides communicable disease control
Interprets and implements first aide care - makes recommendations for appropriate procedures for the care of the sick and injured
Coordinates with the non-certified building nurse of their assigned caseload to maintain a schedule for rotation to the assigned building on a regular basis (at minimum once per month)
Interprets the health and developmental status of the students and refers to available and appropriate resources
Plans, interprets, and establishes health care plans for students with special health care needs (e.g. epilepsy, diabetes and asthma) and evaluates outcomes of plans
Counsels, identifies, and refers high-risk children to needed services, including those presenting signs of suspected child abuse and neglect or substance abuse per state regulations and school policies
Identifies and facilitates integration into care for those children and families not currently connected to a primary care provider (PCP)
Participates directly in multi-disciplinary team evaluations and individual education program meetings for exceptional students with medical and developmental problems
Serves as case manager for medically based Section 504 Service Agreements, as identified by administration
Participates in the Student Assistance Program providing intervention and support for students referred with substance abuse and mental health problems the interfere with their success in school
Coordinates directly with school physician and school dentist to provide state mandated examinations
Maintains orderly and current health records
Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students as mandated by the state of Pennsylvania
Completes immunization audit and issues immunization exclusion letters in coordination with the building principal, when applicable
Establishes, reviews, updates, and revises individualized health plans and emergency care plans in conjunction with the non-certified building nurse
Distributes Medicine as per Policy
Interprets and implements policies pertaining to physician prescribed medications in the school
Administers medications and performs procedures according to physician orders and school district policies and procedures and in accordance with West Perry Use of Medication Policy 210
Ensures physician orders for individual student medications and/or treatments comply with requirement(s) for administration
Health Promotion/Risk Reduction
Promotes a safe and healthy positive environment, including adherence to all applicable state and federal health and safety regulations
Coordinates communication with the Department of Health for potential disease outbreaks or concerns and questions. Disseminates information to all district buildings as appropriate
Review and revise health room procedures in accordance with guidance from Centers for Disease Control, PA Department of Health, Division of School Health, and/or other applicable professional organizations and disseminates aforementioned information to district and building administration
Communicates with School Health Consultants when parent concerns or practice concerns are brought to the attention of regulating agencies
Acts as an educator of resource person to facilitate learning of positive health and wellness behaviors of students, staff and parents
Promotes and educates students to assume responsibility for managing their own health care
Participates in the investigation and control of diseases and injuries among school population
Coordinates with the athletic department regarding sports physicals, injury management, return to play recommendations, etc.
Serves as a resource person for facilitating learning of positive health and wellness behaviors for students and staff
Maintains and improves skills, which enable the nurse to practice in accordance with nursing theory, roles and standards or nursing practice established by national and professional nursing organizations, and in accordance with the laws of Pennsylvania.
Planning and Coordination
Coordinates in conjunction with the Coordinator of Student Services and building principal(s) to arrange nursing coverage in the event of a nursing absence
Participates in planning for continuing staff development activities for school staff
Develops and coordinates a continuum of ongoing, comprehensive health care programs and services for all students in collaboration with their families, school and community.
Collaborates with other school disciplines, agencies and families to plan and implement school health service and school health promotion activities
Oversees/directs school health programs and services
Participates in the process of evaluating the developmental appropriateness of certain activities for students, such as employment programs, sports, physical education programs and other activities
Recommends policies and establishes procedures/guidelines for nurses to practice in accordance with nursing theory and roles/standards of school nursing practice established by national/profession nursing organizations
Collects data and completes state level reporting such as SHARRS, PA
SILR, etc.
Conducts evaluations of school nursing services, including self-evaluation, audition of school health records, and peer review
Must be able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions, possess conflict mediation skills, and maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues
Conducts monthly AED checks within the building and reports any malfunctioning equipment to district maintenance. Orders replacement parts as necessary.
Other duties as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, and/or Coordinator of Student Services
