Nurse Extern - Emergency Department

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

: This Externship under the direction of a Registered Nurse will meet the patient needs effectively and efficiently by applying complete nursing care to assigned patients. Care must be provided through all life stages of ages in medical, surgical, and telemetry areas of nursing within the Emergency Department.

CASELOAD

: Provide patient care throughout all life stages from infancy through geriatrics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF EXTERNSHIP

: (other duties may be assigned) Actively participate in patient care. Communicate pertinent information both orally and written to appropriate staff daily. Responsible for performing variety of assigned tasks that may include activities of daily living by assisting with serving meals, feeding patients as necessary, and providing fresh water and nourishment between meals. Assist patients with personal hygiene and provide personal hygiene to patients who are unable to assist themselves. Assist in ambulating, turning, positioning, transporting patients and answering call lights. Complete patient assessments Reporting observations in patient condition to patient's nurse. Maintain patient confidentiality and appropriate documentation of all patient care. Identify each patient's age specific needs and provide appropriate care. Maintain 100% compliance with all Hospital policies and procedures.

OTHER DUTIES OF EXTERNSHIP

: Follow standard precaution guidelines.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

: Supervision is received by a Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

QUALIFICATIONS

: Education Required Currently enrolled in a Registered Nurse Program or approved by a State Board of Nursing A Licensed Practical Nurse student must have completed the medical-surgical rotation. BSN Program. A student must be entering their senior year and have completed at least the medical/surgical clinical component of his/her educational experience. Diploma Program. A student who has completed their second year of nursing school. Associate Program. A student who has completed their first year of school as who is considered a senior. BLS required Minimum GPA of 3.0 required.

: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff, management, and other agencies. Requires legible handwriting and computer knowledge Ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team Ability to communicate with RN staff to report changes in patients conditions Ability to provide direct patient care
