POSITION STANDARDS

EDUCATION:

Graduate from an accredited school of nursing Current New Hampshire licence Current BCLS certififcation required upon hire.

EXPERIENCE

Two to three years experience in critical care, emergency care, post anesthesia care, or ambulatory surgical care. Specialty certification related to Ambulatory surgery, PeriAnesthesia Nursing or Endoscopy Nursing desired.

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

Active participant in in-services, educational programs, and educational conferences. Exhibits membership in organizations relevant to professional growth.

AGE OF PATIENTS TREATED

The Registered Nurse cares for pediatric through geriatric patients in the Operating Room, Medical/Surgical, immediate Care Center, Community Care Center and Ambulatory Surgical Services.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Position Objective The Registered Professional Nurse, in the position of Preoperative Coordinator, is responsible and accountable for the surgical schedule for the Operating Room, Procedure Room, Pre Operative Interview Appointments, Anesthesia Consults and acts as a resource for Medical Consults in accordance with the New Hampshire Nurse Practice Act and the Patient Bill of Rights. This position is also responsible for conducting and documenting the preoperative interview and education of the surgical patient in accordance with the New Hampshire Nurse Practice Act and the Patient Bill of Rights. This includes education to patients (and support persons) of all ages, excluding neonates. Professional judgment is utilized in all facets of surgical and related scheduling, preoperative patient interview and education of all surgical patients according to national American Society of Operating Room Nurses and American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses standards. Performance Expectation

• Demonstrates proficiency in all Staff RN Performance Standards/Expectations.
• Educates patient (and family) about upcoming procedure and addresses concerns to alleviate anxiety which promotes positive surgical outcomes.
• Maintains a basic understanding of all surgical procedures performed at APD to effectively answer patient questions.
• Collaborates with all surgeons and their office staff to schedule surgical cases.
• Considers surgeon preference and patients medical needs when scheduling cases.
• Recognizes the importance of equipment needs and the necessity to communicate with the OR Charge Nurse and/or OR Manager of Nursing when scheduling cases.
• Evaluates patient data to determine need for anesthesia or medical consults based on patient history and/or anesthesia protocols.
• Interacts timely with Nursing Manager of Operating Room, changes to the surgical schedule, as well as early and/or late surgical start times and patient information related to special pre/post care needs.
• Interacts timely with the Administrative Assistant (s) to distribute patient data appropriately.
• Recognizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to surgery in order to coordinate the pre-operative experience.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager of
