Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate School Nurse to provide comprehensive health services within a school setting. The ideal candidate will have experience in pediatric and adolescent health, with a strong understanding of medical documentation, emergency response, and student health management. The School Nurse will collaborate with staff, students, and families to promote a safe and healthy learning environment, ensuring compliance with health regulations and standards such as HIPAA and NCQA. Candidates with expertise in EMR/EHR systems, immunizations, chronic disease management, and working with individuals with disabilities are highly valued. This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student well-being through proactive health education and emergency care. Duties Conduct physical examinations and health assessments of students to identify health issues or concerns. Administer medications, injections, IV infusions, and perform venipuncture or phlebotomy as needed. Manage acute pain, perform suturing, wound care, ostomy care, and assist with complex medical procedures such as catheterization or gastrostomy feeding. Respond promptly to medical emergencies utilizing airway management skills, basic life support (BLS), ventilator management, and trauma medicine protocols. Maintain accurate medical records using EMR/EHR systems such as Athenahealth or eClinicalWorks while ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations. Provide health education on topics including nutrition, disease prevention (infectious disease care), mental health awareness (behavioral health), and chronic condition management (geriatrics, diabetes). Collaborate with healthcare providers for discharge planning, case management, hospice & palliative medicine needs, and post-acute care coordination. Assist in developing individualized care plans for students with disabilities or special needs such as developmental disabilities or dementia care. Conduct screenings and evaluations when required; participate in infection control practices and sterile processing protocols. Support families through discharge planning and family planning education; provide guidance on medication administration and aseptic techniques. Skills Extensive knowledge of pediatric nursing practices including neonatal ventilator management, infant care, toddler care, and working with children of all ages. Proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy knowledge, physiology knowledge, CPT coding, ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10), and medical documentation standards. Experience with EMR/EHR systems such as Athenahealth or eClinicalWorks; familiarity with laboratory experience and specimen collection/processing is preferred. Ability to perform diagnostic evaluations including sonography or medical imaging when necessary; skilled in physical examinations and vital signs assessment. Strong emergency response skills including airway management, tube feeding procedures, spinal tap assistance, gastric lavage procedures, and critical care transport protocols. Competence in working with individuals with disabilities or developmental challenges; experience in dementia or Alzheimer's care is advantageous. Excellent communication skills for health coaching, patient assessment, discharge planning, teaching hospital experience beneficial but not required. Knowledge of infection control practices; ability to work within hospital medicine settings such as ICU or Level I Trauma Center experience is a plus.
