Job Summary The Nursing Director of Medical/Surgical (MedSurg) is responsible for the overarching clinical leadership, strategic management, and operational excellence of the Inpatient MedSurg department at Laredo Medical Center. This pivotal leadership role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, and evidence-based patient care while maintaining strict adherence to healthcare regulations and organizational goals. As Director, you will champion a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, continuous quality improvement, proactive staff development, and exceptional patient satisfaction. Essential Functions & Core Responsibilities Clinical Operations & Patient Care Oversees daily clinical operations within the MedSurg department to ensure safe, efficient, and evidence-based patient care that aligns with regulatory standards. Collaborates seamlessly with physicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate continuum-wide patient care. Responds promptly and empathetically to patient care concerns, complaints, and incidents—conducting thorough investigations and deploying swift corrective actions. Maintains deep, up-to-date knowledge of evolving healthcare industry trends, emerging clinical practices, and regulatory shifts to keep the department adaptive. Leadership & Staff Management Provides visionary leadership, mentorship, and continuous professional development opportunities for department personnel. Manages employee scheduling to ensure the highly effective allocation of clinical resources, consulting with executive leadership on potential staffing challenges. Conducts regular performance evaluations, establishes clear professional goals, and delivers actionable feedback to staff. Assumes a direct staff nursing role when critically required, fulfilling all established competencies for the position. Strategic Planning & Financial Oversight Manages departmental budgets, staffing grids, and resource allocation to maintain financial efficiency without compromising clinical excellence. Collaborates with hospital executive leadership to set the department's strategic trajectory, including long-term planning and capital budgeting. Monitors expenditures, ensures cost-effective service delivery, and evaluates/implements new technologies to optimize operational workflows. Develops, implements, and refines departmental policies, protocols, and procedures to maximize overall efficiency and quality. Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance Tracks and analyzes key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality metrics to isolate areas for improvement and optimize patient outcomes. Ensures absolute compliance with all relevant healthcare regulatory bodies and governing agencies. Spearheads the departmental accreditation process, participating actively in audits, inspections, and quality control practices to ensure safety and accuracy. General Expectations Facilitates transparent communication and collaboration between clinical staff, hospital administration, and external stakeholders. Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance. Complies with all hospital-wide policies, ethical standards, and operational guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field OR Seven (7) or more years of direct clinical experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.
Advanced Degree:
Master's Degree is preferred.
Clinical Experience:
3-5 years of experience in a closely related clinical field (required with a Bachelor's degree).
Leadership Experience:
3-5 years of previous healthcare leadership or supervisory experience
Licenses & Certifications RN License:
Active Registered Nurse (RN) State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure (Required).
BLS Certification:
Active Basic Life Support certification (Required). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional leadership, organizational, time-management, and interpersonal communication skills. Proven ability to build cross-functional relationships and collaborate effectively with diverse, interdisciplinary medical teams. A proven track record of fostering positive, professional work environments built on teamwork and continuous improvement. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution capabilities. Ability to work autonomously, delegate tasks responsibly, and meet rigid deadlines under pressure. In-depth knowledge of healthcare industry best practices, clinical workflows, and strict regulatory compliance guidelines. High proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office platforms, healthcare software systems (EMR/EHR), and clinical data analysis tools.
