Job Description

Summary The Nurse Extern is a currently enrolled nursing student entering their final year of an accredited ADN, LPN, or BSN program. The Extern works under the supervision of a licensed Nurse to assist with administrative and clinical duties within the scope of an unlicensed staff member. The purpose of the externship is to provide educational and professional experience that prepares the Extern for a future position as a licensed Nurse. Provide and/or assist patient with hygiene care and activities of daily living including, but not limited to toileting, bathing, and oral/denture hygiene. Obtain and document vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, and intake and output. Report abnormal results to the patient's primary nurse. Perform data entry, collection, and transport of specimens according to policy. Obtain blood products from Blood Bank per policy. Assist patient with nutrition and hydration needs including, but not limited to, the positioning and preparation of patients for meals and assistance with feeding. Assist with patient mobility including, but not limited to, repositioning, transfer to chair and/or ambulation. Stock and maintain adequate supplies and equipment (i.e. patient rooms, med room supplies, emergency airway supplies at the bedside, etc.). Perform patient safety sitting including adherence to policy and procedure for suicide precautions. Provide post-mortem care and assist with morgue procedure. Assist with the admission, transfer and discharge process including, but not limited to, room set up, patient belonging management, and transport. Perform chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education, Experience, & Certifications Minimum Required Education:
Actively enrolled LPN, ADN, or BSN student entering the final year of an accredited nursing program.
Required certification:
American Heart Association BLS Certification required upon hire.
