Our Organization Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders. The BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center is designed to serve individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. It offers a range of urgent care services, including therapy, medication management, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention. Unlike traditional emergency rooms, the facility emphasizes a peaceful and therapeutic atmosphere. Role Overview The Nurse, Psychiatric Care (RN) - Crisis Stabilization PT supports adults (18+) receiving short-term residential stabilization at the 16-bed Regional Crisis Stabilization Center (RCSC) within the BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center. This role exists to ensure safe, timely nursing care and medication support during acute mental health and co-occurring substance use crises. Key responsibilities include collaborating with the staff psychiatrist on prescribing workflows; administering and monitoring medications (including psychotropics); completing comprehensive nursing assessments; delivering crisis and supportive counseling; analyzing clinical information to determine appropriate nursing/medical interventions; coordinating needed medical services; and consulting with the treatment team to develop individualized care plans. Required qualifications/skills: Licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing is required One (1) year of behavioral health experience as a Registered Nurse Candidates will register to practice as a QMHP trainee within the first 30 days of employment A Typical Shift You'll begin by reviewing overnight notes, current orders, and any changes in client presentation, then connect with the oncoming team to confirm priorities for the shift. Throughout the day, you'll maintain a steady rhythm of medication pass, observation, and documentation, while staying ready to respond to fluctuating acuity in a crisis-stabilization setting. You'll touch base with the psychiatrist as needed to clarify orders and trends, coordinate with internal staff to align on next steps for each client, and communicate with outside medical resources when follow-up services are required. In between scheduled activities, you'll provide brief, supportive check-ins that help clients remain oriented, informed, and engaged in their stabilization plan—ending the shift with clear handoff notes to support continuity of care.
