The Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board is seeking a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse to join the Southeastern Family Project Residential Facility, providing specialized care to antepartum and intrapartum women and their families. In this role, you will deliver comprehensive perinatal nursing care, including OB/GYN assessments, care planning, and evaluation of medical and nursing interventions. You will support mothers and newborns through pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery-including routine and cesarean births-while also overseeing medication management and promoting safe, effective treatment practices. As part of a collaborative care team, you will provide client education, supportive counseling, and holistic care that empowers families and promotes healthy outcomes for both mothers and infants.

Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.
The Southeastern Family Project (SEFP) is licensed both as a 3.5 & 3.1 comprehensive residential program for pregnant and postpartum women diagnosed with a substance use disorder. Gender specific substance use treatment services are provided in a healthy, stable and secure residential environment. The program is designed to serve residents based on individual need in a person-centered treatment environment which encourages stabilization. A holistic approach to prevention, intervention, support and treatment is provided to foster the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being for the women and families.
ROLE SUMMARY
As a Registered Nurse (RN) for the Southeastern Family Project, you will provide specialized nursing services within the facility, supporting intrapartum and antepartum women and their families. The role exists to ensure safe, coordinated perinatal care, including assessment, care planning, and evaluation of nursing and medical interventions.
Key responsibilities include OB/GYN-focused health assessments; developing nursing plans of care and clinical documentation; coordinating referrals, transport, and attendance at medical appointments; maintaining consultation linkages with OB/GYN and high-risk obstetrical providers; providing supportive counseling and health education; delivering crisis intervention as needed; participating in interdisciplinary service planning; and overseeing facility medication management (storage, administration, and destruction) using safety and infection control practices.
Required qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program (diploma) and/or BSN from an accredited college/university
Current Virginia RN licensure (Virginia Board of Nursing)
OB/MH/SA

A TYPICAL SHIFT
In this Registered Nurse (RN) - Perinatal Care (SEFP) role, your day blends structured clinical follow-through with responsive support. You may start by reviewing new referrals and overnight updates, then touch base with program staff to align on client needs and priorities. Time is spent coordinating upcoming prenatal, postpartum, and specialty appointments—confirming logistics, communicating with physician offices and pharmacies, and ensuring continuity across services.
Throughout the shift, you'll provide direct education in clear, practical terms—covering topics such as postpartum recovery, newborn care, and medication understanding—while offering calm, supportive counseling to clients and families. You'll also remain available for urgent concerns, helping the team navigate emerging medical or behavioral changes with appropriate escalation and documentation. The day typically closes with completing clinical records, confirming next-step plans with the interdisciplinary team, and preparing for on-call coverage when assigned.
