57 . Job Summary The RN is a professional caregiver who provides skilled, compassionate care to patients with a variety of medical conditions. The RN must be able to assess, implement, and evaluate nursing care to a diverse group of patients using sound critical thinking and decisive judgement in accordance with approved policies, procedures, and protocols. Must have specific and basic knowledge in the principle, methods and techniques involved in nursing practice for outpatient populations. Accepts responsibility for maintaining and improving professional skills essential to the area of clinical practice. Supports the mission and values of Summit Pacific Medical Center (SPMC). Functions in compliance with the Washington State Nurse Practice Act. The PICC RN will also serve as an Outpatient Infusion Nurse; and will demonstrate proficiency in IV therapy, venipuncture, and the management of central venous access devices. Proficiency in PICC/Midline placement is required. Work shift is 10 hours, 0700-1730 with variable days and rotating weekend coverage. Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities Performs comprehensive patient assessments to determine appropriate vascular access device selection based on diagnosis, therapy requirements, duration of treatment, and patient-specific factors. Inserts PICC lines and other approved vascular access devices using ultrasound guidance and strict sterile technique in accordance with evidence-based standards and facility policies. Verifies catheter placement per organizational protocol (e.g., ECG tip confirmation or radiographic confirmation) and ensures accurate documentation of procedure details. Provides ongoing assessment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and removal of PICC lines and other central venous access devices. Administers medications and infusion therapies in accordance with education, competency validation, and approved nursing techniques. Recognizes and responds appropriately to complications such as infection, occlusion, thrombosis, malposition, or mechanical issues, initiating appropriate interventions and provider notification. Educates patients, families, and caregivers regarding PICC line care, activity restrictions, infection prevention, and signs/symptoms requiring medical attention. Collaborates with physicians, advanced practice providers, infusion services, pharmacy, and other members of the healthcare team to promote safe and effective vascular access management. Accurately and thoroughly documents patient assessments, insertion details, catheter characteristics, patient tolerance, education provided, and follow-up care in the electronic medical record. Ensures informed consent is obtained prior to procedures and practices within the framework of the Washington State Nurse Practice Act. Maintains competency in vascular access practices through ongoing education, certification, skills validation, and participation in professional development activities. Participates in quality improvement initiatives related to central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) prevention, vascular access outcomes, and patient safety. Fosters a culture of teamwork by participating in orientation of new personnel, nursing staff meetings, in-service training, and special projects as assigned. Staff Member Responsibilities 1. Required Education and Experience Graduated from an accredited school of nursing, bachelor's degree preferred Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience preferred Prior vascular access experience required, or infusion therapy experience preferred Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations Current and unrestricted Washington State Nursing license Current BLS certification ACLS required PICC certification and/or Vascular Access Board Certification (VA-BC) Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Working knowledge of nursing procedures and functions Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient's needs. Respects patient's right to privacy, protects confidential information following HIPAA standards and maintains accountability for patient safety. Knowledge of the organization, functions, and activities of the nursing unit. Ability to organize and prioritize assigned work in coordination with other activities on the unit. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to read, write and speak the English language. Ability to communicate and document information accurately and legibly. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Proficient in the use of current technology, including Microsoft Office products. Ability to learn and effectively use electronic medical records and other systems and equipment.
