Job Description

The Specialty Authorization Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all referrals and prior authorizations—particularly those related to Workers' Compensation, Tricare, and VA patients—are processed accurately, promptly, and professionally. This role supports patient access, provider coordination, and compliance by serving as a key liaison between the practice, payers, case managers, and external partners. Job Summary Daily responsibilities may include:
Job Requirements:
Represents NIOS with professionalism, ensuring a positive service experience for patients, providers, and external partners. Processes all incoming referrals in a timely, thorough, and compliant manner. Works collaboratively with medical secretaries to schedule initial appointments for specialty payer patients. Obtains necessary demographic, clinical, and payer documentation to establish accurate patient records and billing accounts. Secures prior authorizations and treatment approvals in accordance with payer requirements. Coordinates referrals, authorizations, and the distribution of provider dictation/reports for assigned cases. Serves as a liaison between practice providers, case managers, adjusters, insurance companies, and other external partners. Provides updates on patient treatment status, work restrictions, and return‑to‑work information to appropriate stakeholders. Partners with case managers and adjusters to resolve authorization barriers and treatment‑plan issues. Completes, logs, and distributes disability, FMLA, and related paperwork on behalf of the practice. Maintains accurate records to support timely processing and effective workflow. Provides backup support for medical secretary or medical assistant duties as needed. Builds strong working relationships with Workers' Compensation companies, employers, case managers, and other referral sources. Assists in marketing efforts to enhance the practice's visibility among relevant employers and specialty payer communities. Performs other duties as assigned to support operational efficiency and patient care coordination.
Required Education and Skills:
High school graduate or GED One year of experience in a medical office setting One year of experience with insurance eligibility. Knowledge of medical office management systems and procedures Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong attention to detail Proficiency in MS Office and patient management software Able to work independently with minimal supervision in completion of assigned tasks Ability to work well under pressure About Us Established in 1977, The Neurological & Spine Institute of Savannah is one of the largest private neurosurgical practices on the east coast.
