Summary:
The RN, Inpatient Oncology functions as the expert clinical coordinator and primary resource for all inpatient chemotherapy admissions. This role is accountable for coordinating complex oncology care across inpatient settings, ensuring safe chemotherapy administration, interdisciplinary alignment, continuity of care, and comprehensive education for staff, patients, and family members.
Key Responsibilities:
Serves as the primary clinical resource and point of coordination for all inpatient chemotherapy admissions. Facilitates inpatient chemotherapy initiation, continuation, and treatment transitions in collaboration with medical oncology, pharmacy, and inpatient care teams. Reviews chemotherapy-related plans for clinical readiness, safety considerations, and alignment with institutional protocols and evidence-based oncology standards. Provides expert consultation and real-time clinical support to bedside nursing staff related to inpatient chemotherapy administration and management of treatment-related complications. Collaborates with physicians and advanced practice providers to support implementation and evaluation of interdisciplinary plans of care. Acts as a liaison between inpatient units, outpatient oncology services, pharmacy, and ancillary departments to ensure continuity of treatment and care transitions. Provides ongoing education and clinical guidance to inpatient nursing staff related to chemotherapy administration, oncology safety standards, symptom management, and recognition and management of treatment-related complications. Educates patients and family members regarding inpatient chemotherapy treatment, anticipated side effects, supportive care measures, and transitions of care to promote understanding, engagement, and adherence to the plan of care. Serves as an educational resource for interdisciplinary teams to support consistent, evidence-based oncology nursing practice across inpatient units. Participates in the development, evaluation, and optimization of inpatient chemotherapy workflows, policies, procedures, and best-practice guidelines. Monitors quality, safety, and compliance indicators related to inpatient chemotherapy care and escalates concerns appropriately. Serves as a clinical resource during regulatory reviews, quality initiatives, and safety-event follow-up related to chemotherapy care.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited program required. Minimum of 5 years progressive oncology nursing experience required. Demonstrated experience with inpatient chemotherapy administration and oncology care coordination required. Proven ability to manage complex workflows across multidisciplinary teams.
Licenses and Certifications:
Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the appropriate state. Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®) preferred. Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification required or obtained per organizational policy.
