Job Description

The Emergency Department Admission Clerk is responsible for greeting patients and visitors, completing patient registration and admissions, verifying insurance information, collecting required documentation, and maintaining accurate patient records. This position works closely with physicians, nurses, EMS personnel, and other hospital departments to ensure efficient patient flow while providing outstanding customer service.
Responsibilities:
Greet patients and visitors in a courteous, professional, and compassionate manner. Register emergency department patients accurately and efficiently. Obtain demographic, insurance, and guarantor information. Verify insurance eligibility and secure required authorizations when applicable. Collect co-pays and other patient payments according to hospital policy. Explain and obtain required registration forms, consents, and HIPAA documentation. Maintain confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations. Answer incoming telephone calls and direct inquiries appropriately. Coordinate communication between patients, families, clinical staff, and ancillary departments. Enter and update patient information within the electronic medical record (EMR). Assist with patient transfers, admissions, and discharge paperwork as needed. Monitor waiting areas and communicate patient concerns to clinical staff. Perform other clerical and administrative duties as assigned. High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous experience in hospital registration, medical office, admissions, or customer service preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred. Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems preferred. Basic understanding of insurance verification and patient registration processes preferred. Proficient computer and data entry skills. Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking abilities. Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or emergency situations.
