Performs emergency procedures such as cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation and airway maintenance. Transports patients receiving oxygen and mechanical ventilation. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the close supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor or designee who reviews work for conformance with established policies, procedures, and standards. Administers respiratory therapy and ventilator care to Medical Center patients including those in critical care units. Observes and records patient symptoms and reactions to therapy. Reports to physician about patient. Makes appropriate adjustments. Proceeds with respiratory care based on patient assessment, planning, implementation, and situation. Participates as functioning member of cardiac arrest team. Answers respiratory distress and STAT treatment calls. Assists with blood gasses and interpretation. Performs pulmonary function tests. Provides end tidal co2 and bicore measurements. Provides, and may instruct in, proper tracheal suctioning and airway maintenance. Sets up, adjusts, and regularly monitors mechanical ventilation, BiPAP, and CPAP units. Transports patients receiving oxygen and mechanical ventilation with portable oxygen, ventilator, and hand-operated ventilation devices. Lifts, turns, moves, and transports patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, etc. using appropriate techniques as instructed/assigned. Cleans, maintains, and monitors all types of respiratory therapy equipment. Performs minor repairs when necessary. Assists in instructing students, patients, medical staff, and other personnel in respiratory therapy techniques. Orients medical staff to availability and functionality of respiratory therapy equipment. Routinely performs patient education, documenting teaching in multidisciplinary record. Assists physicians with bronchoscopies and management of short and long-term ventilator patients. Works cooperatively and collectively with members of health care team. Represents respiratory therapy in multidisciplinary meetings. Demonstrates effective judgement and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) the unique needs of patient age groups served. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and or technologies that relate to job assignment. Graduation from an AMA approved Respiratory Therapy Technician or Registry Program. Knowledge of modern principles, methods, materials, and equipment of Respiratory Therapy. Knowledge of possible hazards to patients and of appropriate precautionary measures. Ability to maintain records and make accurate reports involving the use of computerized information. Ability and willingness to work in manner that will not endanger the safety of self, others, or equipment. Ability to lift and bend during CPR and to transfer and reposition adult and infant patients. Ability to push equipment, supply carts, cylinders, wheelchairs, gurneys, etc. ranging in weight from 5 lbs. To 400 lbs. or more. Ability to lift equipment, boxes, stock items ranging from 3 lbs. to 60 lbs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Medical Center employees, physician, patients, visitors, and the public.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Graduates must successfully complete the NBRC registry examination and become licensed within the State of Michigan within 6 months from the date of appointment to this classification. Failure to attain certification and state licensure within the 6 month period shall result in termination of employment.
