SUMMARY:
Working with the Director of Patient Care Services, this individual is responsible for scheduling staff, participating in hiring decisions, monitoring department budgets, making sure the department's equipment is maintained in good working order and that supplies are kept at par levels. They also provide education to RTs in the department when needed, and maintain department and hospital policies and provide respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of cardiopulmonary system, under supervision of Physicians and by prescription, by performing the duties of a Respiratory Therapist.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS THE LEADER 1.
Twenty-four hour/seven day a week availability accountability for the staffing and management of the department. 2. Scheduling of staff, including the approval of time off requests and employee time sheets for payroll purposes 3. Monitoring of Budgets 4. Making sure that department equipment is in good working order, and ordering of equipment with the approval of the Director of Patient Care Services. 5. In coordination with the Director of Patient Care Services, establishment of par levels of supplies for the department and ordering supplies 6. Provide education when needed 7. Maintain department and hospital polices 8. Conduct employee evaluations 9. Participate in hiring decisions. 10. Other responsibilities as decided by the Director of Patient Care Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Reads prescription, arterial blood gas analysis and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment such as type and duration of therapy, and medication and dosage. 2. Determines most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with Physician's orders. 3. Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus environmental control systems. 4. Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients. 5. Monitors patient's physiological responses to therapy such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes. 6. Performs bronchopulmonary drainage and assists patient in performing breathing exercises. 7. Observe equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy. 8. Consults with Physician in event of adverse reactions. 9. Maintains patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy information. 10. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently. Orders repairs when needed. 11. Demonstrates respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel. 12. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
Six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Certification/License:
Must have current PA license, must have current CPR certification
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deals with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Other Skills and Abilities:
Assist and set up all Bronchs, calibrate ABG machine each shift on QC log, deprotinize and condition ABG machine weekly, sign MAR's for meds given, draw ABG's and draw ABG's from arterial lines, perform CPR as needed, may need to perform EKG's or Holter monitors as needed.
