Job Description

The speech and language pathologist acts under the immediate direction of the Director of Special Education and in cooperation with the site administrator. The specialist will arrange for the implementation of the speech and language program within the total educational setting by providing diagnostic, remedial and consultative services for children with communication disorders, and by conveying pertinent information to staff and parents.
Example of Duties:
Identification and assessment of pupils with disorders of language, speech or hearing, which may include serving as a member of the IEP Team. Providing specialized instruction for pupils with disorders or deviations of language, speech or hearing. Directing rehabilitative-therapeutic educational management for pupils with disorders of language, speech or hearing. Counseling parents, teachers or other school personnel in management of a pupil's language, speech or hearing disorder, deviation or development.
Qualifications and Abilities:
Possession of a valid California speech and hearing credential or the necessary qualifications to obtain a waiver/emergency speech and hearing credential. Ability to operate on an itinerant or single site basis. Experience with and competence in all types of language, speech and hearing disorders of children in regular and special educational programs. Ability to demonstrate current knowledge of the field. Ability to work effectively with co-professionals and parents.
Desirable:
Proficiency in the Spanish language. Masters degree or intent to obtain one. Experience with physically handicapped students.

Comments and Other Information The East Whittier City School District provides educational opportunities (transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, including special education) for approximately 7,400 children. The District employs approximately 1,000 teachers, administrators and support staff. We have 13 schools which operate on a traditional school year schedule.
