Key responsibilities of a school speech pathologist include:
Screening and Assessment:
Conducting standardized tests and observations to identify students with potential speech and language disorders, such as articulation difficulties, fluency issues, language comprehension problems, or voice disorders
Diagnostic Evaluation:
Administering comprehensive assessments to determine the specific nature and severity of a student's communication challenges. Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
Development:
Collaborating with teachers, parents, and other specialists to develop personalized goals and interventions based on the student's needs within their IEP.
Direct Therapy Provision:
Providing individual or small group therapy sessions to address identified speech and language goals using appropriate therapeutic techniques and materials.
Classroom Consultation:
Consulting with teachers to provide strategies and support for incorporating communication skills into the classroom curriculum and addressing student needs within the learning environment.
Progress Monitoring and Evaluation:
Regularly assessing student progress toward their IEP goals and making adjustments as needed.
Parent Communication:
Communicating with parents about their child's speech and language development, providing information on therapy strategies, and involving them in the treatment process. Required skills and qualifications : Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program A current state license to practice speech pathology Certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Strong assessment and diagnostic skills
