EL RANCHO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT DEFINITION
To perform a variety of tasks as prescribed, directed, and generally supervised by a credentialed Speech-Language Pathologist, such as, but not limited to, activities designed to develop language skills, oral-motor control for speech production, vocalization, and use of assistive technology devices for communication. A Speech-Language Pathology Assistant is authorized to provide language and speech development and remediation services as defined in the Business and Professions Code [(E.C. 56363 (b)(1)]. The regulations provide that Speech-Language Pathology Assistants are not authorized to conduct evaluations, interpret data, alter treatment plans, or perform any task without the express knowledge and approval of a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Employees in this classification must meet guidelines developed by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants as well as State requirements in AB 205 (chapter 1058 of 1998 Statutes). Employees in this job class carry out activities essential to the development of speech and language skills, oral and assisted communication, and the understanding, interpretation and appropriate use of language. Employees work with students who have severe speech and language disorders as well as physical and emotional disabilities. They may be assigned to work in the classroom, separate speech room, or community setting and may travel from school to school to serve the students assigned. The amount and type of supervision required is based upon the skills and experiences of the speech-language pathology assistant, with range of 10%-30% direct supervision suggested.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Provides direct therapy and follows documented treatment plans or protocols; documents student performance such as tallying data; prepares charts, records, and graphs and reports information; assists the speech-language pathologist during assessment of students; assists with documentation as directed; assists with clerical duties such as preparing materials and scheduling activities; performs and checks maintenance of equipment; assists instructional personnel in the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); supports the supervising speech-language pathologist in research projects and in-service training programs; assists with department operations such as scheduling, record keeping, safety/maintenance of supplies and equipment; collects data for quality improvement; exhibits compliance with state and federal regulations; performs other related duties as directed; may be required to give and receive information in a second language in addition to English.
CERTIFICATE REQUIRED
Standard Red Cross First Aide Certificate (must possess or acquire and maintain within six months of employment).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and math; effective record keeping practices and procedures; Phonemic Awareness; Phonetics; human anatomy and physiology, especially as it relates to speech production; normal speech-language-hearing development; language disorders and rehabilitation; articulation disorders and rehabilitation; clinical methods and procedures; hearing disorders and aural rehabilitation; augmentative and alternative communication systems; Spanish may be required.
Ability to:
Deal effectively with attitudes an behaviors of students; use appropriate language (written and oral) in communicating with students, families and professionals; interface effectively with supervisor; manage and use time effectively; maintain a facilitating environment for assigned tasks; select, prepare, and present materials effectively; maintain student performance documentation; provide assistance to the speech-language pathologist(s); perform tasks as outlined and instructed by the supervising speech-language pathologist; manage behavior of students and treatment programs; provide effective implementation of treatment objectives; operate standard office equipment; obtain and maintain a valid First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate.
Education:
An Associate Arts Degree and/or graduation from a speech-language pathology assistant certificate program or a Bachelor's Degree in speech-language pathology or related field; registered as a speech-language pathology assistant with the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board (SPLAB); accrue 12 hours of professional development in every two-year period; First aide and CPR certification.
