As assigned by an OPS Administrator - Shared position Kellom and Conestoga Elementary Schools.
Reports To:
Building Principal, Early Childhood Coordinator Work Schedule/FLSA Status:
Full-time, 12 month / Non-Exempt, 40 hours per week, 261 days per year
Position Purpose:
The Early Childhood Speech Language Assistant supports targeted early language and foundational literacy development for all young learners under the supervision and guidance of the Early Childhood Teacher and Early Childhood Coordinator. By helping create language-rich and literacy-rich classroom environments , this role reinforces vocabulary growth, storytelling, conversation, listening comprehension, and early engagement with books and print—key predictors of later reading and academic success. This role works in alignment with classroom instruction and instructional coaching to strengthen oral language as a foundation for reading and learning. Funding is provided through the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties. The person selected for this position will support either Kellom and Conestoga or Lothrop and Franklin. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Support classroom activities that develop language, vocabulary, and early literacy skills . Reinforce and implement instructional strategies that strengthen early reading and writing skills in alignment with teacher planning and instructional goals. Facilitate small-group language and literacy activities such as vocabulary practice, story retell, and conversation. Provided targeted individual support based on observed and identified language and literacy needs Model developmentally appropriate language and encourage peer interaction during routines and play. Support literacy-rich centers, shared reading, and play-based learning . Encourage engagement in story time, songs, conversations, and early writing activities . Assist with observation and documentation of emerging language and literacy skills to inform instructional support and monitor progress. Promote inclusive and supportive learning environments . Collaborate with teachers to maintain language- and literacy-rich classrooms . Collaborate with teachers and specialists to ensure consistent and intentional language and literacy support across instructional settings Maintain confidentiality of student information. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Understanding of early childhood development and the link between language and literacy . Ability to model clear, age-appropriate language and vocabulary . Knowledge of how play, storytelling, and shared reading support early literacy . Strong communication and collaboration skills . Ability to follow instructional plans and implement strategies consistently , and respond to guidance from teachers and instructional staff. Patience, flexibility, and a positive approach with young children. Ability to work effectively as part of a classroom team . Understanding of how to support targeted oral language development as a foundation for reading. Qualifications Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Human Services, Psychology, Early Childhood Development, Language and Communication, or related ?eld that includes coursework in the principles of social work, child development, counseling and/or psychology Experience working with young children in educational settings preferred. Working Conditions Frequent interaction with young children in classroom and play-based learning environments. Ability to sit, bend, kneel, and move throughout the classroom. Assist with routines, transitions, and learning activities. Active participation in instruction and literacy centers.
