Job Description

Job Summary The Sterile Processing Technician Trainee is an entry-level role that supports the cleaning, sterilization, and preparation of medical instruments used in patient care. In this position, you'll receive hands-on training while learning how to ensure surgical tools and equipment are safe, sterile, and ready for use. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in starting a healthcare career in a behind-the-scenes role that directly supports patient safety.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required Maryland resident Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18-24)
Experience:
No prior experience required; on-the-job training provided
Licensure/Certification:
Willingness to learn sterile processing procedures and pursue certification if required
Skills & Abilities:
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Basic computer and documentation skills preferred Willingness to learn and grow in a healthcare setting Ability to work independently and as part of a team What You'll Do Receive and transport used surgical instruments from patient care areas Clean and decontaminate instruments following strict protocols Inspect instruments for cleanliness, damage, and proper function Assemble and package instrument trays for sterilization Operate sterilization equipment (under supervision) Label, store, and distribute sterile supplies to departments Maintain accurate records of sterilization processes Follow infection control and safety standards at all times Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant What the Job is Really Like This is a behind-the-scenes role , but it plays a critical part in patient safety—every instrument must be properly cleaned and sterilized The work is highly detailed and repetitive , requiring focus and consistency throughout your shift You'll work with instruments that have been used in procedures, so you must be comfortable with decontamination and biohazard environments The role is fast-paced , especially when surgical demand is high You'll be on your feet most of the day, moving between workstations and handling equipment The environment can be warm and humid , especially near sterilization equipment You'll follow strict processes and safety standards , with little room for shortcuts This is a learning-focused role , where skills build over time and can lead to certification and advancement Work Environment & Demands Hospital sterile processing department Frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing, and pulling (up to 25-50 lbs) Exposure to biohazard materials (with proper protective equipment) Work in high-temperature and humid conditions near sterilization equipment Requires strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols May include evening, weekend, or holiday shifts What Success Looks Like Instruments are cleaned, inspected, and sterilized accurately every time Procedures and safety protocols are followed consistently Work areas are organized and compliant with standards Documentation is accurate and complete You demonstrate reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn You develop skills that support advancement into certified sterile processing roles Caring for Our Team We offer a comprehensive benefits package to support our employees' well-being and professional growth.
