The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience. Job Overview The Technician Trainee operates within a structured training framework to develop operational competency in the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, and assembly of surgical instrumentation. Under direct supervision within the Central Service department, this individual learns to process complex surgical tools for the OR, Emergency Department, Delivery Room, and various clinical units. This role combines hands-on technical learning with mechanical equipment operations (sterilizers, cart washers) to ensure a steady supply of safe, sterile medical equipment while strictly adhering to infection control and hospital quality standards.
Qualifications Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent educational credential (GED). Ability to work a permanent, rotating evening or night shift (3:00 PM - 11:30 PM or 11:00 PM - 7:30 AM), with final shift assignment determined based on facility operational needs. Reliable daily commute to the New Brunswick campus for the entire duration of the training program. Strong baseline of interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in English to comprehend technical manuals. Demonstrated attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and an active willingness to follow strict technical and safety instructions.
Preferred:
Prior exposure to a hospital, medical, or clinical logistics environment. Basic familiarity with clinical instruments or medical terminology. Scheduling Requirements Full-Time (FT) Day Essential Functions Develops core technical competency in learning specific medical cleaning products, solutions, and decontamination procedures utilized in Central Service. Evaluates soiled clinical instrumentation to choose and implement the appropriate manual or automated chemical cleaning method for each item. Learns how to properly process, sanitize, and maintain delicate surgical instruments for the OR, Delivery Room, Dental Clinic, Emergency Department, X-Ray, Minor Surgery, and inpatient nursing units. Picks, audits, and expertly assembles complex instrument trays and surgical baskets for distribution across all patient care departments. Operates, monitors, and maintains all high-tech mechanical cleaning machinery, including steam sterilizers, cart washers, and specialized drying cabinets within the department. Maintains precise documentation logs regarding sterilizer cycles, temperature validations, and biological testing indicators to support regulatory compliance. Maintains a clean, safe, and organized decontamination area, adhering strictly to universal safety precautions and OSHA biohazard waste guidelines. Collaborates effectively with the central service team, nursing units, and surgical supervisors, performing additional related tasks as requested.
