Responsibilities include preparing surgical workstations, supporting patient education, assisting chairside, and ensuring safe, efficient clinical operations from pre‑op through post‑op care. Essential Roles & Responsibilities Workstation & Surgical Preparation Prepare operatory and instruments for scheduled procedures in accordance with surgeon preferences and OSHA infection‑control standards. Set up sterile trays, surgical kits, medications, and required equipment. Ensure proper PPE usage (masks, gloves, protective eyewear, hair secured). Review and update patient dental and medical records prior to treatment. Maintain strict adherence to sterilization, biohazard, and OSHA protocols. Patient Preparation Escort patients to the operatory and create a calm, supportive environment. Review medical history, confirm procedure details, and answer questions regarding pre‑operative and post‑operative instructions. Prepare patients for consultations, extractions (IV sedation, nitrous oxide, or local anesthesia), implant placement, biopsies, and other oral surgery procedures. Capture diagnostic imaging including panoramic X‑rays, 3D scans, and CBCT. Chairside Surgical Assistance Assist the Oral Surgeon throughout procedures, anticipating needs and ensuring a clear, safe surgical field. Operate suction, handpieces, and surgical instruments with precision. Monitor patient comfort and observe for any complications or changes in condition. Maintain accurate instrument passing, procedural flow, and sterile technique. Support patient recovery post‑procedure and determine readiness for discharge. Contact patient escorts when the patient is cleared for release. Uphold HIPAA confidentiality at all times. Post‑Procedure & Operatory Turnover Provide detailed post‑operative instructions to patients and their escorts, including medication guidance and site‑care expectations. Schedule follow‑up appointments as needed and ensure treatment notes are completed and sent to referring providers. Safely dispose of sharps and contaminated materials. Transport instruments to sterilization and perform proper decontamination procedures. Clean and reset operatory, equipment, and surfaces for the next patient. Document treatment details and update patient records promptly. Additional Responsibilities Perform administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, treatment note entry, and communication with referring offices. Maintain and operate dental equipment, including intra‑oral scanners, panoramic units, 3D imaging, and CBCT machines. Monitor inventory of surgical supplies, medications, and materials; restock as needed. Ensure all instruments and equipment are maintained in proper working condition. Provide exceptional patient care and customer service at all times. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of training and experience. Education & Experience Requirements High school diploma or GED required. 1-2 years of experience in a dental, oral surgery, or surgical setting strongly preferred. Current CPR/BLS certification preferred. New York State Dental Assistant Certification is not required for most oral surgery assisting tasks, but NYS Licensed Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) is preferred for expanded functions. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, walk, and bend for extended periods. Ability to lift, move, or position up to 25-30 pounds as needed. Ability to work in a fast‑paced clinical environment with exposure to surgical equipment, sterilization chemicals, and bodily fluids. Work Environment Clinical dental/oral surgery setting. Requires strict adherence to infection control, OSHA, and safety protocols. Fast‑paced environment with frequent patient interaction and procedural turnover.
