Job Description

Job Summary:
Provides assistance to the primary (main) surgeon during a surgical procedure. Provides exposure, hemostasis, tying or sewing, plus other functions as determined by the primary surgeon responsible for the patient/procedure. Works with team in operating room to ensure patient receives quality care. Maintains responsibility for accurately and responsively performing routine assigned clinical tasks of limited complexity.

Education and Work Experience:
High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required Associate's/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience:
Preferred Licenses/Certifications:
Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) certification: Required Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS
OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS
) certification from approved vendor per AH policy:
Required Facility Specific License/Certifications:
AHA-BLS or ARC-BLS:
Required Essential Functions:
Prepares and positions patient for surgery, assists in visualization of the operating field, provides hemostasis, harvests surgical grafts, performs closure of incisions and applies various wound dressings. Works under direct supervision or within defined parameters. Performs pre-and postoperative activities to facilitate optimal patient care. Verifies availability of surgical equipment and supplies (e.g., reserves equipment and implants for surgery according to surgeon's preference.) Prepares and maintains operating room environment according to surgical procedure (e.g., temperature, humidity, lights, suction, furniture.) Obtains diagnostic studies for reference and reviews tests to identify results. Performs surgical hand scrub, gowning and gloving. Coordinates and participates in draping of patient. Verifies operative consent and other pertinent information (e.g., history and physical, advanced directives, laboratory results, diagnostic results, etc.) Elevates questions, problems and significant challenges to more senior staff for direction. Reviews patient medical chart and associated documentation. Makes decisions regarding own work, often limited and confined to routine matters. Requires minimal independent judgment. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
