Job Summary:
Prepares patients in the neonatal to geriatric age group for surgical intervention. Performs in the operating room as scrub and/or circulating technician. Pulls supplies and equipment for surgical procedures according to surgeons preference cards. -Accomplishes in between case and end-of-day cleaning. Restocks room and returns all equipment to place of origin. Decontaminates, cleans, processes, and sterilizes instrument sets and non-disposable supplies according to prescribed procedures and techniques. Basic knowledge of procedures is necessary to process and sterilize supplies and equipment and complete required records and reports -Participates in in-service education programs. Assists in training and orientation programs. Assists in the establishment of operational standards to insure compliance with recognized infection control, sterilization, quality assurance, supply management and employee health/safety principles and practices, and AHA, AORN, AAMI, and ANSI standards. Monitors compliance with established standards and identifies deviations for correction. Directs or participates in the development of solutions in the quality assurance process for identified deviation. Assures quality care for all patients, from neonatal to geriatric age groups is accessible. Assists in establishing and maintaining optimum guidelines in training paraprofessional personnel. Job Qualifications Education 1) High School diploma or GED is mandatory. 2) Courses in science, biology, and chemistry are highly desirable. 3) Graduate of an Operating Room Technician program preferred. 4) Associate degree or 2 years of college is desirable. Licensure, Registry or Certification 1) Certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred. 2) Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is mandatory Experience 1) Experience in preparing patients for surgery, maintaining surgical instruments and assisting surgeons in the operating room is mandatory. 2) Able to anticipate and plan for routine or crisis situations or conditions. Personal Job-Related Skills Familiarity with sterile technique and application. Physical and Sensory Requirements (With or without the aid of mechanical devices) 1. Work is primarily performed in a standing position. Some walking, bending, lifting and moving heavy medical equipment is necessary. Assisting other personnel in moving patients to and from beds is necessary. 2. Possesses knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and physiology in patients from neonatal to geriatric age group, sterilization procedures (Steam and Chemical), aseptic technique, operating room procedures, nomenclature, care and use of surgical instruments and equipment, decontamination and reprocessing procedures, preparation of surgical packs and basic medical supply procedures is mandatory. Supports and applies the philosophy, policies and procedures of the Operating Room and Central Supply. Must be able to effectively communicate. Projects self-confidence, earns respect and loyalty of physicians and staff. 3. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position. 4. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of the position can be fully met. 5. Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients, providers, personnel, and support agencies. 6. May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of patients during emergency situations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1) Functions as scrub technician / circulating technician during surgical procedures. A) Provides safe, clean environment for patients and personnel through implementation of good infection control practices and safety precautions. B) Supervises and participates in the preparation and sterilization of supplies and instrument sets. Maintains updated instrument count sheets for all sets used in the operating room. 2) Administrative duties A) Participates in educational programs. B) Assists in the orientation of new personnel and in teaching new members of the staff. C) Assists in maintaining updated instrument count forms for all sets used in the operating room. D) In coordination with the Director of Nursing, establishes administrative policies, including developing and implementing of policies and procedures, resolves related problems. E) Reviews and maintains records for three years regarding sterilization, loads, biological testing, for quality assurance purposes. F) Assists the Director of Nursing in monitoring the effectiveness of plans and programs designed to insure compliance with recognized principles and practices for infection control, sterilization, central supply management, and employee health and safety. G) Advises the hospital nursing staff on technical matters regarding the sterilization process. 3) Performs other related duties as directed. Other Significant Requirements 1) Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis. (per HIPAA guidelines) 2) Performs other duties as deemed necessary by DON, or Hospital Administrator 3) Adheres to Clay County Memorial Hospital personnel policies Accountability Directly responsible to the Director of Nursing and/or Hospital Administrator.
